Man Thing
2005
Lionsgate DVD

I am a huge fan of Man-Thing. Discovered him years ago. Mostly thanks to the fanboy jokes about "Giant Sized Man-Thing". But once I started reading the comics I realized how great they are. So when I heard there was going to be a film based on them I was pretty damn excited. Sadly even amongst comic fans people think of Man-Thing as a knock off of Swamp Thing. And while they do share some similarities they are very different.

Sadly the film isn't that good. Man-Thing is just this brainless swamp creature. He was never a scientist. And lots of the subtext from the comics is missing. Plus for some reason the setting has been moved from the Florida everglades to the Louisiana bayous. The Bayous are Swamp Thing's territory not Man-Things.

The FX work is ok. Same with the acting. I don't think this did well. It premiered on SciFi channel in the States. But I think overseas it might have played in some theaters. I grabbed the DVD because I found it cheap. Plus I was hoping on a second viewing I might enjoy it more. That didn't happen. I bet if you haven't read the comics you might enjoy it much more than I did.

Embrace of the Vampire
1995
Unrated DVD

I had heard about this film months before it hit the video stores. Rumors were flying that Alyssa Milano was going to be totally nude in it. Since I had had a crush on her since about the second season of Who's the Boss I had to see it. So the day it came out I hit every video store in Jackson County MS. Finally finding it at this tiny place. I got lucky and they had got in the unrated cut.

There really isn't much plot. Alyssa is the virginal college girl who keeps having dreams about sex. There is a vampire that needs her blood to live. But in the end she chooses her boyfriend over the vampire.

As you can see the plot is C R A P!. What this film is remembered for is two scenes. One is a dream Alyssa has which is basically an orgy. With her,the vampire, her boyfriend and another female student. The other scene is when this other female student talks Alyssa into posing for her. Alyssa gets topless and starts making out with the lady.

The film feels like a half ass combination of a DTV vampire film and something you you see on Skinamax after dark.

Embrace of the Vampire gets a C-. And that is only because we get to see Ms Milano topless a couple of times.

Dracula
1931
Universal DVD

I first saw this film years ago when I was 3 or 4. I really don't remember much about seeing it that time. Then years later when the SciFi Channel first hit the airwaves they were showing it. I stayed up late one Sunday night to watch it and to be honest wasn't impressed. I was about 16 and the slow pace of the film bored me.

Years later one Halloween night while I was passing out candy I saw that Turner Classic Movies was showing all the Universal classics. So I had them on. And this time I actually enjoyed Dracula.

I am sure most people reading this know the plot.Renfield goes to Transylvania. He goes to the Count's castle and ends up getting bit. So Dracula and Renfield come to England.

Now I totally understand why this film is considered a classic. And the performances from Bela Lugosi,as Dracula, and Dwight Frye,as Renfield, are outstanding. But the rest of the cast isn't good. The movie feels more like someone filmed a stage play.

The has some interesting extras. There is a commentary that is loaded with all kinds of info. A nice documentary. Plus it includes the semi infamous "Spanish" version of Dracula. At night on the same sets a Spanish language version of Dracula was filmed. And in my eyes besides the guy playing Dracula the rest of the cast is much better.

Dracula gets a C.

Toy Story of Terror
2013
ABC tv airing

I had completely forgotten this was suppose to air. But thanks to a chubby Trekkie I found out. So I quickly got a copy.

Now my love for the Toy Story franchise is huge. For years I was a big time toy collector. And as I am sure with most kids, I would spend hours with my toys making up stories and various adventures.

This short has the toys on a vacation somewhere. They are all in the trunk of the car enjoying a classic horror film on a portable DVD player. The car gets a flat. So the family pulls into a motel. They are going to have to spend the night. Mr Potato Head goes out to explode and disappears. So the rest of the gang goes looking for him. And one by one they disappear. Until only Jessie is left. She meets up with Combat Carl. Who tells her that something is up.

What is going on is the hotel manager has trained his pet iguana to steal the toys. And he turns around and sells them on Ebay. Woody quickly sells and is boxed up and ready to be shipped out. So it is up to Jessie to save him.

I wasn't expecting the animation to be up to the levels of the 3 films and the one short I have seen. But it was. I wish Slinky Dog was in this. But with Jim Varney being gone I doubt we see Slinky Dog that much anymore. Still this was great. Reminds me of when I was a kid and the month of October was loaded with animated Halloween specials. Which is a tradition that has seemed to died.

Toy Story of Terror gets an A.

Three Extremes
2004
Lionsgate DVD

This is a film that I had lots of friends recommend to me. But it never played any theater near me. Then I forgot about it for years. When Movie Gallery was closing it is one of the films I got extremely cheap.

The film is made up of 3 short films. Each made by an Asian director from a different country.

We start off with Dumplings by Fruit Chan. Fruit Chan is a Hong Kong director. This is the first and so far only film I have seen from him. A still extremely pretty older lady is worried that her aging is causing her husband to lose interest in her. So she goes to this woman, Who is played by the always gorgeous Bai Ling. Bai makes these special dumplings. That are suppose to prevent aging and make you look young. But there is a nasty secret ingredient. I have a pretty strong stomach. But when I found out what the secret was and saw Bai preparing the dumplings my stomach did a few flips.

Up next is Cut by South Korean director Park Chan Wook. Again this is the first film I have seen by Park Chan Wook. It is about a film director who comes home to find out an extra from his films is holding his wife hostage. She is stuck in a very elaborate trap. To me at least this is the worst of the shorts. It isn't horrible. But it isn't amazing either.

The final short is Box by Takashi Miike. This one is very surreal and hard to explain. From what I gather there was two young girls. Who did acrobatic performances. Their manager who might also be their father shows favoritism to one of them. The other gets jealous and burns down the tent they perform in. I had seen some Miike stuff before this. And this doesn't have the same feel as the rest of his films. But I do really enjoy it.

The DVD has some decent extra features.Miike does a commentary on his short. Plus we get an extra DVD which has a feature length version of Dumplings. I need to sit down and watch that one day.

Three Extremes gets a B+.

The Hunt for the BTK Killer
2005
Mill Creek DVD

Ever since I was about 10 I have been fascinated with serial killers. I had heard of the BTK killer but really knew nothing about him. Then when I moved back in 2007 I found a good book on him at the local library. So when I found this DVD really cheap I took a chance on it.

This is a made for TV movie. And from what I remember it seems to follow the actual case pretty closely. Robert Forester is great as the cop trying to crack the case. And Gregg Henry blows it all away as the BTK Killer. The BTK stands for Bind Torture and Kill. Which was Dennis Rader's style. He manages to kill 10 people from between 1974 and 1991.The only reason he was finally caught was because he was stupid and sent a floppy disk to the cops. This disk contained metadata embedded in a word file.

Normally I am not a fan of made for TV films. But this one is really well done. I didn't even know it was a made for TV film until I did a small amount of research for the post.

The DVD is barebones. No extras. But it looks decent and the sound is ok.

Stephen King's Graveyard Shift
1990
Paramount DVD

This isn't one of the better films based on a Stephen King story. But still it is enjoyable. It isn't total crap like The Tommyknockers or Dreamcatcher. The short story it is based on is from the great collection Night Shift. Which is my favorite of King's short story collections.

A down on his luck guy gets a job working in a textile factory. He has to work the graveyard shift. The owner wants him and some other workers to go down into the sub levels and see what all they can find. Down there they find terror and death.

The film is well made. With Brad Dourif being the stand out. He plays a rat catcher. The DVD is pretty barebones. But at least looks and sounds good.

Tales from the Darkside the Movie
1990
Paramount DVD

I loved Tales from the Darkside. So when the film came out I wanted to see it. But for some reason I didn't. It wasn't until about 3 years ago I got a chance to see it. I found the DVD really cheap. So I grabbed it.

This is a horror anthology. The wrap around story has the always gorgeous Debbie Harry. She has kidnapped some young child. And is going to cook him for dinner. So to distract her the kid starts reading short stories out of a book.

The first story is titled Lot 249. Steve Buscemi is a grad student who gets framed by Julianne Moore and some frat asshole. So Buscemi loses his chance of graduating. He plots revenge. But reanimating a mummy. A young Christian Slater appears.

The second story is Cat from Hell. This is an adaptation of a Stephen King short story. A rich man hires a hitman to come kill this cat that is in his house. We get lots of dark comedy in this story.

The final story is Lover's Voe. James Remar sees a demonic looking creature kill someone. But the creature agrees to let Remar live if he never speaks of what he has seen. Remar ends up meeting Rae Dawn Chong and marrying her and having two kids. But he is always haunted by what he saw. Finally he breaks down and tells his wife what he saw. It turns out Rae is the monster and reverts to her monster form. Kills Remar  and the kids turn into monsters and fly off.

Then we get the ending of the wraparound story. The kid manages to trip Debbie. He gets out of the cage and shoves her into the stove.

The DVD has a fun commentary with George Romero. And that is pretty much the only extra.

Tales from the Darkside the movie gets a A-.

Night of the Demon
1980
Image Entertainment Horror Collection Extravaganza DVD

This is another film I heard about for decades. I never saw the VHS for rent. And never saw it airing on TV. Code Red released it to DVD. But I didn't manage to get a copy before it went out of print. So when I heard about this 6 film collection from Image Entertainment I had to get it. Got it last year as a X-mas gift.

A college professor and some of his students head out into the woods searching for Bigfoot. And really there isn't much plot to this film. It is just a bunch of gory kills. Most of which are great. Bigfoot uses a hand ax to kill some people. But the most infamous scene is when a biker pulls over to take a piss. He is whizzing on a bush. And Bigfoot happens to be in that bush. So Bigfoot reaches up and rips the biker's cock off. The biker stumbles off and bleeds to death.

This film has an pretty interesting history. Over in the United States it was almost forgotten a few years after it hit VHS. But over in the UK it was added to the video nasty list. So it became a huge cult classic.

A Nightmare on Elm Street remake
2010
Starz airing

I am not one of those horror fans that automatically hates every remake. I have actually enjoyed most of the modern remakes. This film broke that streak.

I had made the 3 hour drive to the coast. To visit family and friends. Plus I wanted to see this movie in a good theater. After leaving the theater I was pissed. The film was horrible. The only good thing was Jackie Earle Haley. And even then he wasn't that good. The acting was wooden. The FX work was mostly CGI and looked horrible. And the plot was very boring.

This is basically the same film as the original. But with a few small changes. In this one Freddy worked at some school. And you find out he sexually molested some kids. That is why the parents burned him alive. the only other change is for about half of the film you are lead to believe maybe he didn't do it. But it turns out he did.

Now I own every other Nightmare on Elm Street film. This one I have never bought. Maybe if I found the DVD for $5 I might pick it up. But $5 is still too much for this piece of shit.

Abraham Lincoln VS Zombies
2012
Bootleg DVD

This is the Asylum Mockbuster of the Lincoln Vampire Hunter film. Now I never saw that. But I did acquire a copy of this film.

Zombies have attack and Lincoln and some of his guards are all trapped in a Fort with a bunch of Confederate soldiers. We find out that as a kid Lincoln's Mom got bite and became a zombie. And this caused his father to commit suicide. Lincoln and his troops defeat the zombies. But he ends up getting infected. So he sends out a message to John Wilkes Booth. And has him come shoot and kill the president.

Sure this was cheesy. It is a Asylum film. But I was actually really entertained by it. The FX work is ok. Most of the acting is decent. And the plot is passable.

The Wraith
1986
Platinum DVD

Before buying this DVD almost a decade ago I had never heard of the film. But after watching it ,it became one of my favorite 80s horror films.

Jamie is a young man who died and the body was never found. Packard Walsh is suspected of killing him. Packard leads a gang of car racers. And has a gorgeous girlfriend played by Sherilyn Fenn. Then one day a mysterious car shows up and starts killing off Packard's gang. Charlie Sheen also shows up around the same time as this mysterious car. He ends up hooking up with Ms Fenn. And we  find out at the end that somehow Jamie's spirit is now in his younger brother's body. The younger brother being played by Charlie Sheen.

This is sort of a prototype for The Crow. We get the guy coming back for revenge against the gang that killed him. I have wondered since seeing this film if maybe James O'Bar was inspired by it. Ms Fenn is great like she is in everything she has done. Plus there is a very short cameo by a late teens Brooke Burke. I don't even think she is listed in the credits. But the first time I watched the movie I noticed her.

The DVD sadly is full frame and has no extras. I know since this version came out a newer better version is out on the market. I will one day pick that up.

Piranha 3D
2010
Sony DVD

When this hit theaters I wanted to see it. But back then the local theater wasn't set up to do 3D. I waited for it to hit DVD and rented it. Really enjoyed the movie. But the DVD was 20 bucks. Then a year ago I found it for $5. Grabbed it and have watched it at least 3 times since then.

Some prehistoric piranhas get loose in a lake somewhere in the southwest. And of course this happens during spring break. So there is all kinds of teens and young adults running around drunk and naked.

The FX work is a nice blend of practical and CGI stuff. The piranha are mostly CGI. But lots of the gore is practical. The acting isn't bad. It has a 1980's B movie feel to it. Which is perfect for this movie.Elizabeth Shue is the stand out in the film. I haven't seen her in anything in years. But she is really good as the single Mom who is also the head cop of the town. Jerry O'Connell is also damn good as a sleazy Girls gone wild style guy. His death scene is one of the highlights of the film.

The DVD has an almost 2 hours long behind the scenes feature. And then a pretty well done commentary. Both of which make this a great DVD to pick up if you are a fan of extra features.

American Scary
2006
Netflix rental

Growing up the only horror host I knew was the short lived Sgt Graves. I heard about Elvira. But her show never aired in my area. It wasn't until 1990 and we got cable and TMC that I got to see another host. That was Joe Bob Briggs. I see people all the time talking about how great Monstervision was. But it sucked , the films were edited and packed full of commercials. His TMC show was so much better. No editing no commercials.

This documentary is about a huge amount of horror hosts. Going from the beginning of the fad till modern day. There is lots of archival footage and interviews with the hosts. And I really enjoyed learning so much about this American phenomenon. But they don't just interview the hosts. They talk to lots of fans. People like Neil Gaiman,Patricia Tallman and Curtis "Booger" Armstrong.

The DVD has a fun commentary on it too. Plus a few additional interviews. So it is worth checking out all the extras.

Ice Cream Man
1995
Mill Creek double feature DVD

Clint Howard plays the ice cream man in this film. As a young kid he watched his neighborhood Ice cream man get killed. After getting out of the mental hospital Clint becomes the new ice cream man. And he goes around killing people. In some pretty brutal ways.

This is a fun mid 90s comedy/horror hybrid. Clint Howard is always entertaining. And Olivia Hussy is really good as the nurse that still keeps an eye on Clint. I really loved the scene where Clint is serving ice cream to a cop and there is an eye ball in it. Clint has been mixing the people he has killed bodies in with the ice cream for years.

The DVD is bare bones. It just has this film and Jack Frost II on it. But it was cheap. I think I paid $3 for it. Ice Cream Man is worth tracking down. This is a film I point out to all the people that tell me no good horror came out in the 90s.

Phantasm Oblivion
1998
Anchor Bay DVD

After waiting for years I finally got to see what is currently the final Phantasm film. I don't think this entry played any theaters. But Christmas of 98 I did a Phantasm marathon. And loved part 4 almost as much the original.

We start off right where part 3 ended. And in this film get a somewhat origin of the Tallman. Turns out he was known as Jebediah Morningside. And somehow invented the spacegates that have appeared in the various Phantasm films. Now this film won't make much sense if you haven't seen the previous 3. And even then it might take a few viewings to really understand what is going on. The ending is a little confusing. But still part IV is a major improvement of that shitty 3rd film. I am biased because the Phantasm franchise is one of my favorites in the horror genre. I love how the films are a weird mixture of horror and science fiction. Plus they have this dream logic feel to them.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2
1986
MGM Gruesome Edition DVD

I was lucky enough to see this in a theater during it's first run. My favorite Uncle took me. And I was blown away with how gory it was compared to the original. I wasn't so happy with all the comedy in the film. That is one reason why when the first DVD release of this came out I skipped it.

Starting over 10 years after the last film, we find out that the Sawyer cannibal clan is still around. And a local radio DJ gets wrapped up in their craziness. Sadly the only returning cast member from the original is Jim Siedow as the Cook. He has been going all over Texas winning chili contest. What the judges don't know is that the secret ingredient is human flesh. Dennis Hopper shows up as the uncle of Sally and Franklin. He is a wacked out Texas Ranger. And Hopper chews the scenery anytime he is on camera.

The Gruesome edition dvd is packed. We get a really fun commentary. And loads of deleted scenes. I think this same edition is out on Blu ray now.More than worth tracking down.

Cabin Fever
2002
Lionsgate DVD

Weirdly I see a lot of online horror fans hating on this film. Most of them seem to hate it because they don't like Eli Roth. I really enjoyed it. And go back and watch it every few years.

We got a group of 5 teens going to a cabin way out in the country. They get infected by a skin eating bacteria. And end up turning on each other. Some of the country folk in town find out about the virus and go and kill off the surviving teens. There is plenty of just plain strange scenes. Like the kid who screams pancakes while doing windmill kicks.

The gore FX in the film are the real stars. There is plenty of well done FX work. Like when Jordan Ladd has half of her face rotted off.  Roth's love of the horror genre shines in this film. It is full of homages to older horror films. And in some scenes has a very 70's Euro Horror feel.

The DVD is loaded with extras. There is at least 5 commentaries. All of them are fairly entertaining. Plus we get a bunch of short stop motion shorts Roth did years ago.

Visitor Q
2001
Media Blasters DVD

Originally saw this many years ago. And since one of my co hosts on Asshat is wanting to cover Asian Cinema we talked about watching it again,

We start off with a reporter hooking up with a very young looking hooker. We find out that this is his daughter. It seems Dad has an issue with finishing too fast. So the daughter doubles her fee. The next scene is the father waiting on the train and some strange guy clubs him in the head with a rock. For an unknown reason the father brings this man home. Where we discover the entire family is 10 shades of fucked up. The mother is covered with scars and walks with a limp. But she also has a heroin habit and works as a hooker to afford her smack. The young teen son is being bullied and takes this out on the mom. He has a closet full of rug beaters that he uses to beat his mother. What is strange is how dysfunctional this family is. But an event near the end brings them all together. With the daughter finally coming home.

Out of all the Takashi Miike films I have seen this is the best. Some of his films have a very slow pace. But Visitor Q moves quickly. Now a quick warning this is a somewhat disturbing film. So if you can't handle shocking stuff skip it.

The Greenskeeper
2002
Echo Bridge 20 film Multipack DVD

Back in the early 2000s when most videos stores were clearing out all their VHS, I was hitting them and buying up any cheap horror VHS I found. Hollywood Video had a deal 10 VHS for 10 bucks. So I dug around and found 10. This one I grabbed because it was from Roger Corman's production company. Plus it looked like a comedy/slasher.

Allen is the assistant greenskeeper at a huge golf course. His father died years ago. And now his mom has remarried. Allen has a very annoying girlfriend and all he really wants to do is become an author. But there is someone killing members of the golf club.

Sure this is low budget. And very cheesy. But the comedy in the film makes up for the flaws. Plus there is some inventive kills. One guy gets killed by having his testicles placed in a ball washer. A couple gets killed using the tool they use to make the holes on the golf course.

Only two things make this film stand out. First former Atlanta Braves pitcher John Rocker plays the killer. And Kip Winger, from Winger, does all the music.

And I talk about three movies I recently watched.

31 Days of Horror Movie 10

Friday the 13th
1980
Paramount Deluxe DVD

Now I figure most people reading this review know the plot of this film. The film that helped jumpstart the 80s slasher boom. Counselors are at a summer camp on a lake. They are killed one by one. At the end there is one lady left alive and she finds out who the killer is.

I have now owned this film 5 times. Got it on VHS back in the late 80s. Then sometime in the mid 90s bought the laserdisc. But both of those were the slightly cut version. The film got some minor trims to get an R rating in the USA. So in the late 90s/early 2000s I imported an uncut VCD. Paid way too much for what amounted to about 15 seconds of additional footage. In 2008 I bought the original release DVD for $5. Then finally 2 years ago got the four pack of the deluxe versions of the first 4 films extremely cheap. Finally I owned a nice looking copy of the fully uncut version. And this deluxe dvd is loaded with interesting extra features. We get an informative commentary with Sean Cunningham. A featurette on Sean. A so called Friday the 13th Reunion. The only extra that sucks is the "Lost tales from Camp Blood part 1". Which feels like some crappy fan film.

Now the Friday the 13th films seem to be the most popular slasher series for my generation. They have never been my favorite. That would be the Texas Chainsaw Massacre films. But I do enjoy the Friday films more than the Elm Street series or the Halloween series. The Friday films never try to be more than they are. They are just pretty much brainless gore films.

American Werewolf in London
1981
Universal Full Moon Edition DVD

I can still remember first time I saw this movie. It came on TV and I had loved werewolves since seeing the Universal classic "The Wolfman" back in the late 70s. Now the TV edit of course was missing lots of scenes. But still I fell in love with this film. And over the years I have owned it on many home video formats. Last year I found this loaded special edition DVD for $5. Or course I had to get it.

Two friends are backpacking across the UK. They stop in a pub and are told to not go out on the moors at night. But being dumb asses they don't listen. They are attacked by a werewolf. One of them dies. But the other survives. So the surviving guy becomes a werewolf. What makes this stand out is the friend that dies keeps appearing and over the course of the film is decomposing. Plus the transformation scenes are so well done. The first time I saw the lead guy turn into a werewolf I was shocked. This was nothing like watching Lon Chaney turn into a werewolf. I also love how the film is loaded with dark humor.

The DVD has a great commentary. Then also includes a very well done documentary about the making of the film. I think the documentary is as long if not longer than the film. Just the documentary alone is worth the 5 I paid for it.

I had heard of this film for years. And thought I had seen it. Well one of the co hosts of my podcast  wanted to cover it on the next episode. So I sat down to watch it. After watching it I realized I had not seen it before.

The basic plot is the boss of a Yakuza gang disappears. His second in command starts looking for him. We find out that a brutal killer known as Ichi has killed this boss. The rest of the film is Karkihana looking for his missing boss. And Ichi killing people. The kills are all very bloody and gory. Now while I did enjoy this film, the pacing of it was kind of slow. There was plenty of scenes that had nothing really to do with the plot and could have been cut out. For every 5 minutes of entertaining stuff we get 10 minutes of slow stuff. There is plenty of pretty outrageous scenes. Kakihana cuts off the tip of his tongue. Ichi splits a guy in half top to bottom. We find out that the guy who is Ichi's boss has brainwashed him and been lying to him for a long time now. We never find out why this boss, named Jirii, wants this one Yakuza gang killed. Finally after almost 2 hours we get the confrontation we have been waiting on. Ichi vs Kakihana, which is the highlight of the film.

Ichi the killer gets a C+.

31 Days of Horror Movie 07

Staunton Hill
2009
Starz Channel airing

Read the on screen guide listing of this film and it sounded interesting. We get 5 college students hitchhiking through Virgina on their way to DC for some rallies. The truck they hitch a ride in breaks down. So they stay the night in an old barn.

The barn belongs to a crazy family of rednecks. And we get your typical backwoods redneck horror tropes. There is some ok acting and decent FX work. But the plot is by the numbers.

I didn't realize till the film was over that this was directed by George Romero's son Cameron. But early on in the film one of the college kids ask the rest of them if they have seen "Night of the Living Dead". That should have been a huge clue. While this wasn't a horrible film.Nothing about it stands out. Really glad I just caught this on TV and didn't rent or buy it.

31 Days of Horror Movie 06

Carrie
1976
MGM Special Edition DVD

I first saw this film when  I was about 5 or 6. Before seeing it I didn't know who Stephen King was. But after watching this film I knew I wanted to read some of his books. Thankfully one of my older cousins had most of them and loaned them to me. And Carrie is still one of the best adaptations of a King novel to film so far.

Carrie White is a very sheltered young lady. Her mother is ultra religious and do all she can to keep Carrie from the outside world. The film starts off with Carrie in the showers after gym class. Her period starts and she has no idea what is going on. The other girls start throwing tampons at her. The gym teacher comes in and stops this. But Carrie is devastated by the events. The school lets her go home early. Carrie tells her mother about what happens. And the mom blames all of this on Carrie being full of sin.

One of the girls that was tormenting Carrie hatches a plan. She finds out that the BMOC has asked Carrie to the prom. So she lays a trap for Carrie. But the trap backfires and Carrie finally gets her revenge on all the people that have been mean to her.

I really enjoy this movie. Sissy Spacek is great as Carrie. And looks the part. Carrie is described in the book as being a strange looking young lady. And Sissy is strange looking. The rest of the cast are all pretty decent. The FX work is well done.  And I love some of the angles and camera tricks Brian Deplama does.

The DVD has two documentaries on it. Plus a featurette  on the musical based on the film. I wish it had a commentary. But I only paid $5 for it. Now since this came out over 30 years ago there has been a sequel. Which was decent. A made for TV remake. That remake kind of sucked. Angela Bettis was good as Carrie but the story was changed and watered down since it was made for TV. And in a week or so a second remake will be hitting theaters. With Chloe Moretz as Carrie White. No idea how it will be. But I think I am waiting for it to hit DVD before I see it.

Carrie gets a B+.

Antfarm Dickhole
2011
DVD

Been on  Bill Zebub kick recently. And had seen 4 of his films. Enjoyed them all. So one of my co-hosts and I decided to watch Bill's newest film for the Asshat Podcast.

We started watching it one night. But were both drunk and kept getting distracted. So 2 days later we sat down to watch it again. I was hoping my memory of it being shit was because I was drunk. I was wrong.

Some guy ends up with South American Soldier ants in his dick. Anyone that touches his cock gets attacked and killed by them. Now going in I was expecting a low budget, but still funny film. With at least 4 or 5 decent looking women. What I got was a low budget ,unfunny film , with no good looking women in it. The FX work was the worst I have seen in  a Bill Zebub film. This one didn't even have some halfway interesting subtext to keep me interested.

Zombie Christ
2011
Stream

This is one of the more recent films from the prolific director Bill Zebub. Some druids bring Christ back to life. He is this jacked up skeleton. He goes around attacking faux-Suicide Girl looking women. A woman and this older man team up to stop Zombie Christ. The film is basically an excuse to show lots of naked women. Most of the women are really attractive. A few of them are way too thin. But at least 75% of them are pretty hot.

If you have never seen a Bill Zebub film, this is a good one to start with. It is jammed packed with good looking women, lots of comedy and just absurd situations. Like when Zombie Christ rapes a nun with a chicken leg. I doubt the film had a budget bigger than $1000. And it shows. But still if you like low budget horror this is worth watching.

I recently did a long indepth review of this film on my podcast.

From a Whisper to a Scream
1987
TGG Direct DVD

This is one of the great Vincent Price's last films. I had heard of it for years. I think I might have even owned a VHS of it before. But don't remember ever watching it. Grabbed a DVD with this and Theater of Blood for $5 a few days back.

We get 4 stories in this anthology film. The framing device is a historian telling the stories about the town to a reporter. Out of the four stories only the one about so Civil war soldiers being held by a houseful of orphans appealed to me.

Mr Price plays the story teller. And he is the highlight of this pretty subpar film. Directed and produced by Jeff Burr, From a whisper to a scream is the second film Jeff made. I have found Burr to be an under-rated director. With his Leatherface TCM III being a great film.

From a whisper to a Scream gets a D+. And that is only for Vincent Price. Who can make even the most dreadful film somewhat watchable.

Tucker & Dale VS Evil
2010
Magnet DVD

I heard all the hype about this film 3 years ago. So rented it from Netflix and loved it. Yesterday found it for $5 and had to buy it.

Tucker and Dale are just two country guys. Who have finally go themselves a cabin way out in the woods. They go up there for a nice relaxing weekend of fixing up the cabin and some fishing. They see this young blonde college girl get hurt. So they grab her out of the lake and take her back to the cabin to help her.

Her friends see this and assume since Tucker and Dale are country folk they are going to do horrible things to her. The rest of the film is her friends trying to come "save" her and then dying in horrible but very funny ways.

I like how the film flipped the typical southern/country folk stereotypes around. Tucker and Dale have great comedic timing. Plus it just feels like they are life long friends.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil gets an A.
