31 days of horror Year 3 day 05

There's Nothing out there 2 disc 20th anniversary edition
1990
Troma home video DVD

Back in 1990 in the video eye of Dr Cyclops feature in Fangoria I read about this film. And I wanted to see it very badly. But no store around me had it for rent. Then in 1998 I found it for sale at a closing video store. Well after a few years I moved and lost the VHS. Which sucks cause it is kind of rare. And I missed out on getting the first DVD,cause by the time I learned about it the DVD was out of print. But earlier this year Troma released this new version and it is great.

The film is about a group of college age friends going to a cabin way out in the woods. One of the guys works in a video store and has seen every horror movie in the store. So he keeps pointing out all the various horror film tropes and cliches. Now you gotta remember this came out in 1990. And Scream which came out in 96 or 97 had a character that is almost exactly the same. It seems that in the woods surrounding the cabin is a alien that looks like a mutated frog. And this alien kills off most of the kids. For being such a low budget film the puppet used for the alien looks great. And like most horror films from this era we get plenty of nudity. All three of the main girls show their breasts. Now the kills are not gory but this isn't a film built around gore. It is a great horror/comedy. One scene that stands out is near the end. One of the guys is cornered by the alien. And to get away he reaches up grabs the boom mic and uses it to swing outta the alien's way. First time I saw this scene I couldn't stop laughing. And even now it still makes me at least chuckle. The ending sets it up so their can be a sequel.

This 2 disc set is loaded with all kinds of extras. We get a trailer, production stills, cast auditions, and a behind the scenes featurette. We also get a nice long sit down interview with Rolfe Kanefsky who is the directer and writer. Then we get two commentaries. One is with Rolfe and some of the cast and is from the first DVD release. Then we get a all new commentary with Rolfe. Both of the commentaries are a fun listen. Then on the second disc we get a short film from Rolfe that stars Tiffany Shepis. This short is called Mood Boobs. And is about a girl that gets a wishing crystal and thinking it won't work wishes for boobs that change with her moods. It is a very funny short. There's nothing out there 2 disc edition gets an almost perfect A.
