Don Simpson's Megaton Man iBooks TPB

TITLE-Don Simpson's Megaton Man

SOURCE-iBooks TPB

Ahh Megaton Man,the 80s superhero parody that sadly got outshined by The Tick. Created a few years before the Tick, and using a similar premise,Megaton Man has been erraticly published for close to 40 years now.

I first heard of Megaton Man thanks to a short review of one of the issues in some fan press magazine I had gotten. Next trip to the comic shop I grabbed one of the issues from this first volume and loved it. Wasn't until the early days of Image that I found another Megaton Man comic. This time his crossover with Savage Dragon. I read Bizarre Heroes when I found the issues. And then kind of forgot about not only Megaton Man but also his creator the uber talented Don Simpson.

Megaton Man is kind of your basic Superman parody. His secret identity is a reporter for a newspaper. And of course there is a lady reporter he is in love with. Simpson takes the somewhat insane stories from the Silver Age Superman and transforms them into parody and also a warning. Warning the readers of the this series back in the 80s what was coming in the 90s.

Look at the art in Megaton Man. It looks like that early Image overly muscled look. And the being dropped into a comic world with a history that isn't explained. Yep that happened in many of those early Image titles.

5 issues, all in color, with some of the funniest writing of the decade. Really my only complaint about this TPB is the colors are a bit dark.

31 Days of Horror 2024 Day 05 A Haunted House

TITLE-A Haunted House

SOURCE-Universal DVD

Once the Scary Movie franchise died the lower level Wayans brothers,Shawn and Marlon, started this parody/horror/comedy series.Yep another "Hey this is a buck and you never seen it"buys.

Marlon is moving his new wife ,Essence Atkins, into his home. He has a security system set up. And the first half of the movie is a Paranormal Activity parody. Which parts were funny, but having not seen any of the Paranormal Activity movies I am sure there is bits I didn't get.

Then the last half the wife is now possessed, after getting banged by a "gost". And the film morphs into a Exorcist parody. Cedric the Entertainer as the Priest.

In these parody films they throw 100 jokes out at once knowing a few will hit and you will laugh. So for me to judge one of these I take notice of how long I go WITHOUT laughing. And on this one there was long stretches where I might grin at a bit,but no laughes.

Worth renting or streaming. Now I gotta figure out what to do with this movie I will never watch again.

31 Days of Horror 2020 Day 04 Scary Movie

TITLE-Scary Movie
SOURCE-Netflix streaming service

Was looking for a horror/comedy to watch. Saw Netflix had this and I haven't seen it since it hit home video what 2 decades ago.

The movie is pretty much a spoof of Scream. Anna Faris is our lead. And I will give her this she is good at comedy. The rest of the cast is ok. With Shannon Elizabeth being a stand out. And Carmen Electra does great with what is pretty much a cameo,Carmen is pretty much Drew Barrymore in Scream. Sadly the younger two Wayans Brothers are in this. Marlon is ok. But Shawn is horrible. He should have stuck to being a DJ on his older brother's show.

Now being a horror/comedy there isn't a bunch of gore in the movie. But there is plenty of gross out scenes. Like when Shawn Wayans is in the bathroom at a movie theater. He spots a gloryhole and sticks his ear up to it. So of course a penis comes thru the hole and goes through Shawn's ear and comes out the other ear.

Really the best parts of the film happen near the beginning and near the end. The part when the killer stabs Carmen Electra in her breast and a breast implant is caught on the knife is pretty funny.  Then the reveal at the end that Doofy,a even dumber version of David Arquette's Dewey character,is the killer was a surprise.

Sadly this franchise was whored out until no one wanted to see it anymore. And after the second film it went from being a horror/comedy parody to being just a "Hey remember this film? Yea isn't it so funny that we also remember that film". The same trap that sadly too many parody films fall into.

Scary Movie gets a B-.

2017 Comic Challenge 303 Cerebus Bi-weekly #03

TITLE-Cerebus Bi-weekly #03
PUBLISHER-Aardvark Vanaheim Press

Reprinting the 3rd issue of the 300 issue long maxi series Cerebus, this issue of Bi-weekly if I read the inside cover right has a tiny ass print run. For a period of time this series kept the early issues of Cerebus in print in single issue form. Since of course there was always the phonebook trades.

Issue 3 is the introduction of Red Sophia. And this is long before Gerhard was added to the art team. Before reading this I hadn't read any pre-issue 30 or so Cerebus.Sim is still in his full on parody of BWS's Conan stuff. The art is great and teh story is good for what it is.

31 Days of Horror 2016 Day 24 Tiny Toons Night Ghoulery

Title-Tiny Toons Night Ghoulery
Source-VHS rip

As far as I know this is the only Tiny Toons special to never get released on DVD.I never saw it back when it came out so getting a decent looking VHS rip of it was a nice find.

The Night Ghoulery title should let you know that this is a homage/parody of the old Rod Serling Night Gallery show. So this is an anthology. With a bunch of short stories with the various Tiny Toons characters showing up.

The stories are fun.The animation looks great. And over all it is funny.

2016 Comic Challenge 189 The Complete normalman

TITLE-The Complete normalman
PUBLISHER-Image Comics

After having heard of normalman for years I broke down and ordered this trade. That claims to contain every appearance of normalman.

In 12 issues plus an annual Jim Valentino managed to homage and parody pretty much every genre and trope of comic books. And Jim does a damn good job at this. The art looks nothing like his later stuff. It has a kind of Fred Hembeck cartoony style that I prefer to Valentino's later stuff on Guardians of the Galaxy or Shadowhawk.

The scattered one shots and cameos normalman did after his series ended are not as good as the ongoing series was. But at least Jim was at least doing something with the characters.

I am guessing that not only didn't the normalman series not sell that well, but this trade also didn't sell well. That I am basing on how easy it is to find it brand new online for 5 bucks plus shipping.

So if you can handle the beloved genre of superhero comics being parodied grab a copy of this trade.

The Complete normalman gets a BUY!

2016 Comic Challenge 170 Dumm 2099 #01

TITLE-Dumm 2099 #01
PUBLISHER-Parody Press

Under the Bill Maus cover is a horrid piece of shit. Seems Parody Press had all their 2099 parodies crossing over. And if you buy them all the covers form some kind of crappy image.

The story is shit. Pure shit. The art looks like stuff a bored 13 year old doodled in class. And charging $2.99 for this shit....WTF.

2015 Reading Challenge Book 014 Eno and Plum by Terry LaBan

2015 Reading Challenge Book 014 A Cud Comics Collection Eno and Plum written and drawn by Terry LaBan
BOOK TITLE-A Cud Comics Collection Eno and Plum
AUTHOR-Terry LaBan
FORMAT-Trade Paperback
FIRST TIME READING-Yes
COST-$1

One thing I have recently come to love about Amazon is how many extremely cheap used trade paperback and hardcover comic book collections I can get. Recently I got a bunch of Amazon gift cards. So was looking for a bunch of cheap comics. Having read a 3 or 4 page story about Eno and Plum years ago,I think it was in an issue of Dark Horse Presents or Instant Piano,I enjoyed this very early 90s comic.

This collection collects the Eno and Plum stories from 3 issues of Dark Horse Presents and the following 4 issue Cud Comics series.Mr LaBan explains in the foreword how thanks to a barber shop he got majorly inspired by various Gold Key,Harvey and Archie titles. So when he started making his own comics he did stuff like those titles he read as a kid. But with a adult spin on them.

Eno is your fairly normal early 90s era mid 20s slacker. All he really wants to do is watch TV,listen to music, smoke pot and have sex with his girlfriend. Plum ,who to me looks like a grown up Betty Cooper of Archie fame, has a bit more drive  than Eno. Like lots of women of her age in the early 90s she is in love with the fashion and pop culture of the 70s. And while our two leads are really entertaining. I found I liked 3 of the side cast a bit more. First off their is Plum's ultra rich father. He is an ex-hippie that started a business selling candles in the Haight. Which has grown into a multi million dollar company. Any time Eno and Plum need money, which is all the time, they turn to him for a loan. Seeing him being conflicted with running this huge business and the ideologies of his old hippie ways is pretty funny. Then there is Edgar Reamington. He is a Yuppie straight out of the 80s. Edgar also has a massive crush on Plum. And will do whatever it takes to get her.One of the ongoing story lines in this trade has Edgar thinking that Plum hates any man that has a job and makes decent money. So to get her to break up with Eno,he gets Eno a job with Plum's father making a candle that will appeal to Generation X.Which backfires in a great way. Then there is the final side character. Catherine, who is Plum's best friend. And is a thinly veiled version of Cathy of comic strip fame.

The first few stories in the collection are stand alone. But once we get into the Cud Comics reprints we get an ongoing storyline. I need to find out if Terry LaBan has done more Eno and Plum comics.

Now this trade is very much of it's time. It is very very early 90s.With lots of jokes that are dated now. Like how every time Eno and Plum have sex, they are so worried about getting pregnant or catching something they wear full body hazmat suits.Plus Eno dresses just like I did during that time. You know, the typical jeans,t-shirt,flannel shirt and backwards baseball cap. Turn the baseball cap forwards and that is how I dressed for a long time. And still do sometimes now. The storyline about Eno creating a candle to appeal to the Gen X demographic is the best part of the comic. But also the most dated. I am wondering if it is a parody of the OK Soda campaign of that era.Wait does anyone reading this remember OK Cola?

Anyways this is an about 200 page trade. Printed on paper that is a step above newsprint, but isn't that shiny paper most trades currently use.And it is black and white. I have stated my preference for b/w artwork a bunch of times. What surprised me is when I ordered this, knowing it was used,I expected it to be in fairly racked up shape. The trade to my old eyes looks like it was never read. There is no cracks on the spine, which are hard to avoid in thin trades. And the only wear is on the upper corners. But that looks more like damage from being on a shelf for a long time.

Eno and Plum gets a 2.95 outta 5.

31 Days of Horror Day 26 Pandemonium

Pandemonium
1982
VHS Rip

Found a copy of this on Youtube and grabbed it. Hadn't seen it but once years ago on vhs. But all I could remember was Paul Reubens and Tom Smothers. We get a very early 80s parody of horror films.

Set at a cheerleader school, where two of the students are Judge Reinhold and Carol Kane,we find out that years prior there was a series of killings happening.Of course being a mystery we get piles of red herrings.

So we get a horror/comedy/murder mystery. Which is damn entertaining. I am really surprised this hasn't gotten a DVD release so far.

Pandemonium gets a C+.
