Daredevil vs Spider-Man DVD

TITLE-Daredevil vs Spider-Man

Source-Buena Vista Home Entertainment DVD

Wow over 20 years ago this came out. Guessing to promote the live action Daredevil movie. You get 3 episodes of the 90s Fox Kids SPiderman the animated series. Starting off with one where Peter Parker gets Matt Murdock as his lawyer. Fun stuff and makes me wish there was a legit release of this series.

Then a classic 68 Spiderman episode with THE KINGPIN. Now this is a series I haven't got the connection to that so much of my generation does. I lived in an area where it wasn't rerun for years. I knew of the series but never saw it until I got a vhs with a few episodes in a trade in mid 90s. Cheesy and cheap but worth  seeing.

And the last full length extra A Fantastic Four episode with Kingpin. This is not good. Really the only Fantastic Four cartoon worth seeing is the one made in the 2000s after the live action films.

I do like now having a physical copy of at least a few of the Spiderman the animated series show. Just makes me wish when Disney XD was rerunning it often I had recorded them to dvd-rs.

One odd thing I want to point out is the early 90s Computer graphics used for the web swinging scenes in the 90s show makes those parts look very dated. Where as using traditional animation for those scenes in the 68 show doesn't make it look old. Even with that show being close to 30 years old when the 90s show started.

Daredevil vs Spiderman is decent. Glad I didn't pay the 15 to 20 bucks this had to cost when  it first came out. Got this recently at a junkstore for either 50 cents or a buck.

31 Days of Horror 2024 Day 21 Blade

TITLE-Blade

SOURCE-New Line Blu Ray

I was sure I had covered this years ago. Checked the master list, either I never covered it or somehow I did and it ain't on the master list.

Ok so for all the attention Rami's Spider-Man or Singer's X-men films get as starting the modern MCU,even  if not fully connected to the proper MCU,Blade came earlier and started it.

1998 I am at the comic shop and hear from the owner that Blade is coming out. And it is Wesley Snipes playing Blade. Ok hell yea let me know what night it starts we will all go.

Was there opening night and loved it. Nice blending of horror and superhero genres. A modernized Blade,at this time I hadn't read much of the Midnight Sons era of Blade. Fairly gory it was a fun film. One I meant to buy. Then just didn't. Until I stumbled upon this Blu ray at a pawn or thrift a few years back.

Wesley Snipes is Blade a rare vampire that can withstand sunlight. He hunts down the other vampires. And is helped out by Kris Kristofferson,as Whistler. Deacon Frost, who IIRC was a minor villain in the old Tomb  of Dracula comic,is the lead vampire villain.

The movie moves extremely fast for a 2 hour film. Part of that is just the pacing of the film, with a few pots where it slows down for the audience to rest a bit. And thankfully this isn't as quickcut shaky camera for action scenes. That horrible crap would infect movies a year or so later.

The FX is decently done for what I am guessing was a fairly low budget film for New Line of that era. There was no really horrible CGI that stood out.

Blade gets a B+

Venom Let there be Carnage DVD

TITLE-Venom Let There Be Carnage
SOURCE-Sony DVD

Venom hit the Spidey comics around the time I was dropping them. When the first Venom movie came out I caught it late one night on STARZ and it wasn't bad.

Found this sequel new sealed at a pawn shop for a buck and took the chance.

Eddie has a deal with Venom. Venom gets to eat chicken brains and chocolate, aand Eddie and Venom will fight crime.

Kletus Kasaday the serial killer wants to speak to Eddie and only Eddie. Offering him a exclusive interview. While doing the interview Kletus bites Eddie.

Not long after this when Kletus is being put to death he doesn't die. Nope somehow part of the Symbiote is in him now. And Kletus is Carnage ready to destroy the world. Along side his girlfriend Shriek.

Only Eddie and Venom can stop them. But after a argument Venom leaves and is body hopping. Which a trip to a rave that is one of the best scenes in the film.

Leading up to a big battle at a church. Pure capshit spectacle and it was glorious.

Big and dumb, but fun...Venom Let There Be Carnage is worth seeing. And gets a C.

Deadpool Samurai Volumes 1&2 Manga

 Title-Deadpool Samurai Vols 1&2

Publisher-Viz Media

I had heard that Marvel was licensing out some of their caped heroes to a manga company in Japan. But never heard who it was or when it came out. Then early in summer I found these 2 volumes on sale. Want to say I paid 5 bucks each. Not bad.

VOL 1

Deadpool is in Japan and after running into what is basically Japan's version of Spider-man (Sakura Spider) he gets recruited to form an Avengers team in Japan.

So you got Deadpool,Sakura Spider trying to find more members. No idea why none of the normal Marvel 616 Japan based heroes/heroines appeared. But we do get an Idol singer who just so happens to have a Symboite that she has control over. Yep a Japanese Venom... And Sakura Spider is a huge fan of the Idol Singer.

After setting up this 3 person team the rest of the volume is them facing Thanos. Yep Thanos... I know way to powerful to face this trio. But the writer makes it work.

Want to take a second to point out 2 things. One is that I have never given a shit about Deadpool. Read him when he first appeared and was just Marvel's clone of Slade Wilson. And read some of the later stuff that made Wade the 4th wall breaking Spider-man that kills. So  not really sure why I bought these two manga volumes about Deadpool. Might be that I will pick up any cheap comic I find locally hoping this will get the store to order more. Second thing is the writer of this manga is great at making Wade Wilson pointing out all the Manga Tropes.  Sure I haven't read much  Manga since the late 90s, but for about 8 years I wwwas reading piles of it. And even being disconnected from modern managa the tropes havent changed.

Overall this first volume was so  much fun. I started reading it  one night  while waiting on my sleep meds to kick in. Normally I can read for 10 to 20 minutes then get sleepy. Well I got sleepy but was so into this comic I had to finish  it. And it was hard to not just go ahead and read the second and final volume.

The art is really well done. With Deadpool and the other Marvel properties appearing in  an art style that feels like a mixture of manga style plus that kind of IMAGE CLONE style Marvel was asking  artists to do back in 96.

Writing wise this was a fun fast read. Never did I have to go "wait what the fuck is he talking about". And besides the  normal getting use again to going from back to front, right to left, reading style manga uses this was a easy  read.

Also this volume 1  tpb contains a few pages that are exclusive to the tpb.

Deadpool Samurai vol 2

Viz

Now Deadpool has his team, bootleg Venom and bootleg Spidey. They  won the  big fight in the first volume. But here in volume  2 they must face a villain so powerful that he caused the Avengers to form back in the 60s.

Yep Loki is the big bad guy in this volume. I love how Loki is drawn. Oddly unless I forgot I don't remember sseeing Thor show up in  this volume, not even near the end when the Avengers show up.

Not sure if the same artist/artists handled the pencils and inks on this volume. Because the art to me is more detailed and  has the appearance of thicker lines.

Nothing really new in  this volume. Deadpool and his teammates face off againt a super powerful villain. And thanks to Deadpool's mouth they win. Yep Wade's smart aleck mouth defeats Loki.

Where as it took me close to 25 minutes to read vol 1 I got vol 2 read in like 15 minutes. But there was way  less writing and more battle scenes. Lots more 2 page spreads.

Seems these 2 volumes appeared in the weekly Shonen Jump comic. I  don't think this gets published physically anymore in the States,I did read it for close to a year in 2008. But I know it gets a digital release in the states. I do like how the art is bigger in  Shonen Jump, which is easier on my eyes. But It is way way cheaper to just buy the 2 volumes. And I never mentioned it but this series is only 2 volumes. Which is good. Most Manga seems to run FOREVER. So I hate starting in the middle of a series and  hate knowing the series might not get a proper ending. But with Deadpool Samurai you  got two volumess to buy.

Looked and these are $9.99 a volume. So 20 bucks to get the  full story, even though each of them can be read withut  reading the other. And keep in mind  I am not a fan of Deadpool and not  really that much into Manga. But if you  are a fan of either this is easily worth the cover price. And for someone that isn't,this is still good and if you can  find the two volume lot for say 13 bucks or less it is worth the cash.

Deadpool Samurai vol 1&2 Gets a B.

Uncanny X-men Annual 11

Title-Uncanny X-men Annual #11

Every few weeks I will goto my local comic shop and dig through the cheap bins. Usually just grabbing various dead universe stuff to complete my collections. Last trip I found a copy of one of my favorite one in done X-men stories.

This annual came out back in 1987. I can clearly remember grabbing a copy off the spinner rack at K&B drugs. I had already been subscribing to Uncanny X-men for a few years by then. But the subscription didnt include the annuals. Underneath that well done cover is a great story written by Chris Claremont, pencils by the great Alan Davis and inks by Paul Neary.

The story starts off with a very drunk Wolverine walking back to the X-mansion. It is odd cause of Wolvie's healing factor it takes a huge amount of booze to get Wolvie drunk. Wolvie is so loud that he wakes up the rest of the people in the mansion. Which causes the X-men,plus Captain Britain,Megan and Psylocke to greet Wolvie at the front door.

While Wolverine goes up to his room we get treated to Captain Britain,Megan and Psylocke talking in the kitchen. Seems Psylocke not so sure she is fitting in with the X-men.  But up in Wolvie's room, after a long shower,we find out why Wolverine is drunk. This is the anniversary of Wolvie's wedding to Mariko that didn't happen.

Before we can get more from this very very saddened Wolverine the mansion is attacked. By a being calling himself the Horde. Horde is uber powerful. And over the course of the issue manages to kill/take out all of the X-men besides Wolverine.

At the end we get shown how powerful Wolvie's healing factor actually is. And I was very impressed by this the first time I read it.

As I had said before to me Uncanny X-men peaked with issue 200 and went downhill fast. I have sold off most of my X-men collection. Which at one time went from issue 100 to issue 300. But this annual is one of the few issues from that run that I enjoy enough to own. Sure I got it in one of the many Marvel Essential X-men trades, but that is b/w.

If you enjoy the X-men track down this annual. While there is a few small parts that won't make much sense unless you have read all the issues from this era, outside of those tiny parts the rest of the story is written to be read by people with very little prior knowledge of the X-men.

2016 Comic Challenge 290 The Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe

TITLE-The Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe
PUBLISHER-Marvel Comics

Yeah,I know I should have read this one shot years ago. Being a huge fan of both The Punisher and Garth Ennis. But even though I have owned it for close to 10 years I never read it.

Set in a universe were Frank  Castle's family dies in Central Park.Innocents killed in the crossfire between a huge battle,Avengers and X-men vs aliens. Frank snaps when  he gets to the scene. Pulls out his sidearm and kills Cyclops and a bunch of other heroes. He is stopped and sentenced to life in jail.

But a group of rich civilians all of whom either got injured cause of superhero battles or who lost loved ones cause of the same. This part really feels like the genesis of Ennis' later series "The Boys".

Frank agrees, and over the course of this longer than normal comic he manages to kill off every hero and villain in the Marvel Universe.

Finally after killing the last hero,Daredevil,Frank goes to tell the people supplying him  with the ways and means to finish this mission. And lets them know he is done. After being told that he will never be done,Frank kills all of them. Then remembers there is one superhero/villain left. And in the next to last panel Frank Castle eats a bullet and dies.

Fuck this was good. I know it is kind of popular now to rag on Ennis and what the fanboys perceive as his hatred of superheroes. To me it feels more like Ennis deeply loves superheroes and is tired of seeing the same regurgitated crap being published for decades now. So made a simple change, instead of the Mafia killing the Castle family it is super powered beings, and brings us a damn good story. One that thankfully I doubt will ever get a sequel.

2016 Comic Challenge 288 Marvel Tales 179

TITLE-Marvel Tales #179
PUBLISHER-Marvel

It was thanks to Marvel Tales that I managed to read so many of the first 100 issues of Amazing Spider-man. So anytime I am digging through cheap bins at a con or comic shop if I find any issues of Marvel Tales I grab them.

This issue reprints Amazing Spidey #40.Which wraps up the long running Green Goblin mystery. And it is rumored that revealing who the Goblin was is one of the reasons Steve Ditko left the title. So ,and I do prefer Ditko on classic Spidey, this issue is drawn by John Romita.

But back to the story Norman Osborn has Spidey unmasked and strapped to a chair. Most of the issue is Norman explaining how he has spent so much time trying to figure out who Spidey is and then kill him. There is plenty of flashbacks and footnotes to what I am assuming was every Goblin appearance previous to issue 40.

Once Spidey is finally free we get a fun and kinetic battle between the two .I do wish this battle was drawn by Steve Ditko, but Romita's artwork is damn good. At the end of the battle the Goblin gets shocked and gets amnesia. And the issue ends with Spidey dragging Goblin to safety thinking what has been his greatest villain gone for good.

For me Spidey was at his best when it was either Ditko or Romita drawing him. Plus Spidey is one of the few Silver Age Marvel titles I can read now and not find corny as hell.

2016 Comic Challenge 250 Hellstorm Prince of Lies #01

TITLE-Hellstorm Prince of Lies #01
PUBLISHER-Marvel Comics

During the early to mid 90s comic boom lots of odd titles came out. Hellstorm was the one that stood out the most to me. I figured when I heard it was coming out it would be similar to the 70s Son of Satan series. Turns out I was wrong.Instead of the standard superhero stuff Hellstorm felt more like Marvel's attempt to  take a forgotten character and do a Vertigo like series with it.

Hellstorm has his powers back. His wife Patsy Walker is catatonic. And instead of being the hero/anti-hero he was decades ago,he is pretty much pure evil. He has embraced his inner demon.

Rafael Nieves wrote this issue, and the great Michael Bair handles the art chores. Never read much from Nieves, and this is a decent issue. Bair I have loved his art for a long time. But I have always heard he is too slow to do a monthly series.

Since this came from Marvel during the speculator boom of course it has to have a cover gimmick. The gimmick is the cover is made of this odd paper. The solicits referred to it as a parchment cover.I do question the idea of using a gimmick cover on this issue. Mostly cause Damien Hellstorm is a very niche character. Plus there is a segment of the comic fandom that will not read this series because of Damien being the son of Satan.

Another thing that caught my attention was how this issue has the approval of the Comic Code. I seriously doubt they even read the issue. Really this entire series would at least get a PG-13 rating and sometimes going into R rated territory.

2016 Comic Challenge 243 Old Man Logan #10

TITLE-Old Man Logan #10
PUBLISHER-Marvel

So in the present Logan is stuck in the bottom of a deep well. One one of the Silent Order, who are monks not Ninjas like I said before, armed with a bow and arrows at the top.

In the present we get Logan making his way to the top of the well. Where as in the past, which is the future for us but Logan's past, him and Maureen get captured by the Silent Order. And Logan reveals some of his powers to Maureen.

This is one of the best Marvel titles I have read in a very long time. Lemire has so far managed to stay true to the original Old Man Logan story, while filling in gaps.

2016 Comic Challenge 242 Old Man Logan #09

TITLE-Old Man Logan #09
PUBLISHER-Marvel

Logan is using the old Patch alias and trying to find Lady Deathstrike. He gets double crossed and ends up massacring a huge amount of guys.He does get a clue as to where Deathstrike might be hiding and heads to what  turns out to be a ghost village.

Then spread through out the issue we get glimpses in Logan's past. Seems while on the run years ago he ended up in Japan. In a ghost town and ran into an order of what I assume are ninjas. Of course the same thing happens in the present day part of the comic.

Lemire has managed to keep this title interesting for 9 issues so far. I am hoping he has a long run that stays of this quality.

Old Man Logan #09 gets a buy.

2016 Comic Challenge 241 Rocket Raccoon #3

TITLE-Rocket Raccoon #03
PUBLISHER-Marvel

Back in the 80s Marvel started doing 4 issue mini series for what seemed like every character they owned. At the time I wondered why all of the sudden and for only IIRC was 3 years this happened. From what I can find out it was Marvel's way to try to get a bigger market share as a defense against all the new indy comics that were gaining in  popularity.

Anyways Rocket Raccoon at the time was kind of obscure. He had appeared a few times before this. Seems like this mini happened mostly cause Mike Mignola really wanted to do something with Rocket and Marvel wanted more stuff from Mignola.

Now I did read all four issues back in the early 90s,back when lots of those Marvel minis were moved to the quarter bins. But I do not remember much about it. This issue works ok I guess as a standalone. The art is really the main reason to track this down. I am guessing since the mega rise in profile of Rocket Raccoon this formerly cheap mini might not be in the cheap bins anymore.

2016 Comic Challenge 221 Moon Knight #05

TITLE-Moon Knight #05
PUBLISHER-Marvel

Lemire is joined by a shitpile of artists to create the final part of the New Egypt story.

Marc is confronting Moon Knight at the top of the structure. When Moon Knight runs thru a door with Marlene. So Marc pursues them.

Each door he goes thru is a trip to a different reality. With each reality drawn by a different artist. It is kind of like a tour thru the art history of Moon Knight, well if you skip the Stephen Platt era. BTW what the fuck happened to S.PLatt?

Moon Knight is revealed to be Khonshu. And he wants control of Marc's body. Marc refuses and jumps to his death. Then he wakes up. Seems he is an actor named Steven. And is working on an Egyptian themed film.

Yeah Lemire has hooked me I will be back next issue to see where the hell he takes this intriguing series.

2016 Comic Challenge 219 Old Man Logan #08

TITLE-Old Man Logan #08
PUBLISHER-Marvel

This ended up being a nice change of pace issue. Logan still thinks the villain uprising is gonna happen. With this getting worst at night. So Jeanie,I am guessing this is a Jean Grey from the past,is trying to cheer Logan up.

The entire issue is the two of them visiting various sites of battles during the uprising. So Jeanie can show him that it isn't going to happen. While doing this we get lots of details, most of which never before revealed,of how the final battle between the villains and the heroes went.

Lemire keeps writing fun stories. The art team keeps the book looking dark and moody. But also never making it look muddy.

TITLE-OLd Man Logan #06
PUBLISHER-Marvel

Logan is living in the far north cut off town in Canada. So he can keep an eye on his future wife.

The art is damn good. Lemire writes a story that makes me want to keep reading.

2016 Comic Challenge 145 Planet of the Apes & Dracula Lives #90 UK release

TITLE-Planet of the Apes and Dracula Lives #90
PUBLISHER-Marvel Comics

I had heard of various UK b/w weeklies that reprinted and even published new stories featuring all kinds of stuff Marvel had the rights to over the years. But I had never seen or heard of a title that combined Planet of the Apes with Marvel's take on Dracula.

Under the cover there is this nice pin up on the inside front cover. It is signed in the bottom right corner but I have no idea who it is.

I am guessing this lead off story is reprinted from the Marvel Planet of the Apes magazine.Doug Moench handles the story chores. And the always great Mike Ploog does the art duties. There is 7 pages of Ploog's gorgeous artwork. And these 7 pages just confirmed that I need to track down more issues of the POTA magazine from Marvel.

Dracula Lives has been reprinted, but slightly censored,in the Essential Tomb of Dracula trades. I have read the color comic, but never this B/W magazine. This 8 pager has Doctor Sun and even Blade, looking nothing like he does now.The late Gene Colon and Tom Palmer get the art credits. And Marv Wolfman, who also wrote the color comic, gets the writing credit. It is not a bad little story. I wish there was more. But I can understand that with this being a weekly title they gave you short pieces of more stories.
Third is the Man Thing story NIGHT OF THE LAUGHING DEAD!!This was originally in the color Man-Thing series. And was even made into a Power Record read-along record. The late Steve Gerber wrote the story. And Mike Ploog is once again doing the art. IIRC this story was 2 issues of the comic. So getting only 6 pages is kind of a rip. I still can't hate on a comic that got CCA approved, and made into a read along record for young kids, would have this sequence.
Yep a circus clown wanders out into Man-Thing's part of the Everglades. And the clown commits suicide.
Kazar is not only the last comic in the title, but also has the most pages with 10 pages. The final page is on the inside back cover. Never been a Kazar fan. No clue what this is reprinted from.I am guessing made from some of the Kazar stuff in the Astonishing Tales magazine. Gerry Conway is the writer. And John Buscema and Alfredo Alcala are the artists. The art is nice, but the story is blah.

One of the things that really stood out to me in this comic is how few ads there is.In the 33 pages there is 2 ads. Yeah 2 ads.
I remember having a few Corgi diecast cars. But never knew there was a Kojak's Buick model.
I really have no clue what this is. If anyone remembers this product or knows more about it please contact me here on the blog.

Outside of the Kazar story, this was a good read. Good to great artwork. And I like the format of getting a mixture of genres.

2016 Comic Challenge 125 Old Man Logan volume 2 #01

TITLE-Old Man Logan Volume 2 #01
PUBLISHER-Marvel Comics

I had read the first few issues of the Bendis written first volume of this series and enjoyed them.Ended up with a backlog of this series so while waiting on a file to process I started with the first issue of the new volume.Instead of Bendis ,now Jeff Lemire is writing it.I can not remember who did the art on the first volume, but from my memory it looked similar.Andrea Sorrentino is credited as artist.

The so called Old Man Logan from series from a few years ago is now in the modern 2015 Marvel universe. And he quickly realizes if he kills certain people in this time his future might not happen. So all the people that stepped all over Logan before he lost everything,he is paying them a visit.

Yeah this has me enough that I am gonna read at least the first year of it. And of course I love the story ending DKR homage.

2016 Comic Challenge 107 Amazing Spider-man NACME #02

TITLE-Amazing Spider-Man NACME #02
PUBLISHER-Marvel Comics

Before I got this issue in the summer of 2008 I had never heard of it. NACME is the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering. And they put out two of these comics starring Spidey.

So how did I end up with this oddball comic? Well right before my birthday in 2008 I started a job doing home health care. I would goto this old man's house at 8pm. And from 8pm until 8am I was there to help him. He could barely walk and had a few other issues. Most nights he was asleep by 10pm. And since he slept until 5am I had right at 7 hours a night where all I had to do was be there. Right after starting this job I had a death in my family. I went down to the coast for the services. And had two different cousins give me a few longboxes of comics. In one of those boxes was 2 copies of this comic. Which unlike most of the others in the box,was bagged and boarded and appeared to be mint.

We got the usually damn good Dwayne McDuffie writing it. And Alex Saviuk handling the pencils.Chris Ivy handles the inks.

The comics is your standard Spidey story for this timeframe. Full of Spidey wise cracking a bunch while fighting crime.Since the cover mentions a Riot at Robotworld. And which major Marvel supervillain works best with Robotworld? Ultron of course. I have always liked Ultron, and prefer the wise cracking Spidey to any other version of Spidey.

A few years back my cousin's two boys were getting into comics. So I wen through my collection and made them a longbox full of stuff I either didn't want or stuff I had more than one copy of. I had 2 copies of this comic. So threw one into their longbox. Recently both the boys kind of got out of comics. And trying to make a few extra bucks my cousin looked the comics up. Seems there is a decent amount of demand for this comic. She ended up getting $5 for it. Not bad for what I am sure was a giveaway comic.

2016 Comic Challenge 092 Squadron Supreme #03

TITLE-Squadron Supreme #03
PUBLISHER-Marvel Comics

So Nighthawk is surrounded by the Avengers team lead by Steve Rogers. He activates his team signal and then we cut to the other members. And get to see what they have been up to. Hyperion is a truck driver now. Blur is visiting Pittsburgh. And so on.

Most of the issue is a well drawn and paced fight between the Squad and Roger's Avengers. The stand out for me was Blur managing to defeat Quicksilver. Were it is hinted that Blur is faster than Quicksilver.

The Squad gets the upper hand, until the Golden Age Human Torch reveals a new twist on his powers. And this is when Tundarra,I think I got that name right, makes her presence known. And transports the Squad to Weird World.

2016 Comic Challenge 091 Illuminati #01

TITLE-Illuminati #01
PUBLISHER-Marvel comics

Titania has just gotten out of jail. And once her boyfriend, the Absorbing Man ,gets out she wants to move and try to live a normal life.

After weeks of trying to find a job.she ends up getting a job as security at a pawn shop. Thanks to She Hulk, who runs a program for ex-villains trying to turn over a new leaf. A group of 3 armed, and armed with some kind of laser like guns, try to rob the pawn shop. Titania of course uses her powers to prevent the robbery. Which causes her parole cuff to go off. And fairly quickly Luke Cage and Iron Fist show up.

Thanks to an appearance from The Hood,Titania escapes and is asked to join The Hoods new army of villains.

I have never heard of Joshua Williamson before, who is the writer.Same with Shawn Crystal, who is credited as artist. But the story so far and the art are pretty good. The art has a very slight cartoony look to it. Which works pretty well with the colors used.
