The 'Nam Volume 1 TPB

TITLE-The 'Nam Volume 1
SOURCE-Marvel Comics TPB

By the mid 80s almost no War comix were coming out from the big companies. Then Marvel got Doug Murrey an Larry Hama, both Nam vets,to write a series.  And the first 12 issues got gorgeous Michael Golden art.

Now back when this was coming out I skipped it. Figured it coming out from Marvel and hitting the newstands it would be toned down crap. Boy was I wrong.

This TPB reprints the first 4 issues. Where we get introduced to our first lead. Seeing how he goes from BCT to learning how to stay alive over in Vietnam. And slowly over the next few issues we see Mark, our lead, adapt to his new life.

Out of the 4 issues the one that stood out the most was issue 4. The greedy Sgt has a reporter that is gonna film a troop clearing some Charlie out of a village. Shit hits the fan and we learn a pile about this Sgt's past.

This TPB is an odd size. It is slightly taller and wider than your normal comic. But the art on the inside just has white borders on all four sides, instead of making the art bigger. Which I would have loved.

Love the glossary at the front,to explain the various lingo in the book.

Captain America The Ghost Army OGN

TITLE-Captain America The Ghost Army

SOURCE-Marvel Comics/Scholastic Books

Written by Alan Gratz and drawn by Brent Schoonover this is a untold tale of Cap back in World War II. Over in Europe with Bucky, after fighting a bunch of ghosts of dead soldiers, our duo learn of the US Ghost Army. A troop of 10 or so soldiers that use various devices and tricks to make it seem like they are a huge army. Like huge speakers playing soldiers marching.

We also learn that Baron Murdo is here. Helping his grandfather aid the Nazis. That ghosts of dead soldier Cap fought, they are cause of Murdo's Ghost Machine. Which he wants to use to bring Dormamu to Earth.

Full of action and a few twists and turns this is a OGN made for the younger readers. Which is why Scholastic was co publisher.

Gratz writes a story that is easy to follow and also from what I remember of Cap's WWII years this doesn't contridict anything. Plus the ending is a nice way to possibly get more books. With us seeing Murdo heading to meet the Ancient One. And another character heading to Wundogore Mountain.

Captain America The Ghost Army OGN gets a B.

Daredevil Born Again Marvel Premier Collection TPB

TITLE-Daredevil Born Again

SOURCE-Marvel Premier Collection TPB

Ahh Born Again the Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli Daredevil run that is now becoming the newest season of the Daredevil TV show. And I'm guessing that show is why I found this TPB from 2024 in a local Walmart. Couldn't pass it up for 15 bucks.

I was 11 when Daredevil vol 1 #227 came out. I had read most of Miller's first run on DD. But by this time I was deep into other Marvel titles and a few indie books. Thankfully the comic shop owner talked me into adding Daredevil back to my pull list.

Sat down the day after buying this TPB and unlike most comics I didn't just toss it into a stack and leave it unread for months/years. Nah those first 3 pages of issue 227 caught my attention and about an hour later I had read Born Again for the first time since I'm guessing 2003.

So what is Born Again? This was when  Frank Miller decided to revamp Daredevil. He lost everything, his law firm, his license to practice law,his home. Lost it all. And all because his old girlfriend Karen Page had sold him out. She had moved out west years before to do movies. Ended up doing adult films. Got on drugs and in the first 3 pages we see her desperate for a fix. Telling her dealer "I know Daredevil's real name" handing this man this info. Then over the course of a week seeing this info make it's way up the chain to Kingpin. A man  who wants to destroy Daredevil. And armed with this info will do that. That first issue ends with Matt Murdock at his now blown up home. Holding the tattered remains of his costume.

The next issue titled Purgatory has Matt going and confronting Kingpin getting beaten almost to death. Then placed in an old car and thrown into the river. He escapes barely. And Kingpin finds out the car was found but no body in it. Which haunts him.

3rd issue has Matt homeless living with the bums in the alleys. He gets knifed by a guy in a Santa outfit. Ben ,a repoter at the Daily Bugle that knows Matt is Daredevil,is told to not investigate the Kingpin's war on Matt Murdock. After the knife attack a badly wounded Matt ends up being taken to the care of Sister Maggie.

4th issue Karen makes it back to NYC,thanks to a dealer that takes an interest in her. Ben after having his life threatened almost kills the story on Kingpin. Kingpin has a Daredevil costume made for a violent mental patient. And Matt learns Sister Maggie is his mother. Who he had been told died when he was born.

Issue 231 has Matt fighting the fake Daredevil in a brutal fight for a code approved comic in the 80s. Ben keeps working on his story which almost cost his wife her life. And a somewhat happy ending with Matt and Karen re-uniting.

232 Karen kicks heroin. And Kingpin uses his connections to bring in the semi failed experiment on the Super Soldier project, this time a Nam era soldier known as Nuke. Who is a upper addict and being used by a black ops group to go fight battles the US proper can't be in. Sent to Hell's Kitchen this super soldier might be more than Daredevil, who is just healed from the beating in the second issue, can handle.

233 is just perfect. The Avengers show up and take care of Nuke. Daredevil delivers Nuke to Ben's desk at the Bugle and a few people that helped Kingpin take down Matt Murdock flip on Kingpin. Sure Kingpin will not do time but he lost a major amout of power. We end with Matt and Karen in Hell's Kitchen celebrating they made it through all this alive.

If it was just those issues ,and they are recolored,it would be worth the 15 bucks. Nah we get more. We get layouts from Mazzucchelli. Then the complete script to issue 233. Plus the covers of all the TPB collections of this. Every cover in this collection without the logos and stuff.

Just a loaded collection. Sure it is a tiny bit smaller in height and width than a normal TPB. Still for this cheap price it is worth grabbing.

Daredevil Born Again Marvel Premier Collection TPB gets a A.

Weapon X Hardcover

TITLE-Weapon X

SOURCE-Marvel Hardcover

Months ago a buddy gave this to me. He was heading off to start his wrestling training and gave it to me right before he left. Sure I had read Weapon X forever ago when it was coming out in MCP.

That night I sat at the bar listened to a podcast and read the first half. Realizing I hadn't read this story in a long time. Then not that long ago had to get the main car's oil so grabbed this hardcover and a few TPB. Knowing sometimes you are there 2 hours.

So back when this was coming out, every 2 weeks in Marvel Comics Presents,it was touted as Wolverine's origin. And it is and isn't.

Yes we learn how and where Wolverine got the adamantium bonded to his bones. Saw it happen.

But the thing is since this we have been told Logan has memory implants. Was this just another of those? Is so oh well this is still a great story.

Barry Windor Smith handles the story and art. Some of his best in my eyes since his Conan run. The colors really make this stand out.

Reading it every 2 weeks in 8 page chunks and now reading it all in one big book I saw not really any changes in how I digested the story.

Now yea I do wonder who the Professor was answering to. Heard back then it was suppose to be Apocolypse. I have no clue if this has been revealed.

Looked and this Hardcover is out of print and a more expensive version is the current in print version. I prefer the cover on this one.

Weapon X is not perfect but still worth reading if you have any interest in X-men at their peak.

Weapon X gets a A.

Madame Web

TITLE-Madame Web

SOURCE-Sony Blu Ray

So years back I heard Sony was wanting to make a Spiderman universe of films. Ok yea there is enough stuff there it can be done. First up was Venom. Sure that makes sense he is popular. Watched Venom and it was decent. Then we got Venom 2 which was ok and Morbius.... Morbius was worth the buck I paid for the DVD,still sealed,at the Pawn shop 3 months after it hit home video.

Saw Madame Web announced and wondered how this would work. The old blind lady in the wheelchair that sees the future?

Saw the trailer OK yea get it now she will lead a team of teenage Spider Women. Spotted the second Spider Woman and Aranya in the trailer.

It comes out does nothing. Plan was see it when it hits STARZ in June. Then found the above pictured Blu ray, with the digital code still working,at a local junkstore. For cheap.

Cassie Web has a birth that was complicated. She was gonna die not long after birth. Her mother knows of a rumored tribe of Spider people in Peru that might hhave a cure. Goes down there and gets bit by a magic spider not long before dying while giving birth.

Skip ahead 30 years Cassie is now a EMT on a rig with Ben ,Parker yes it is Uncle Ben. After dying for a minute when plunged in a wrecked car into the river she starts seeing flashes of the future.

The three Spider Women? They are all teens that she has to protect. Cause the man that shot and kille Cassies mother has spider powers and knows that in the future the 3 Spider Women will kill him.

Cassie with her new found powers must keep the three women alive. And why in most of her dreams and future visions do we keep seeing a huge S?

Doesn't sound that bad. The acting is decent. The FX work is good. What hurts this so much is 15 or so minutes into the film we see the future where the 3 Spidey Females kill big evil dude. THis lasts 6 minutes tops. And we don't see them with their powers at all until the 4 minute flash forward right before the credits.

Yea the movie they marketed on HEY SEE THIS TEAM OF SPIDERTEENS. Barely has them. Even when they dont have their powers yet. Cause like the film is titled ,this  focuses on Madame Web.

The other thing keeping this from being better is the length. Yea I know few know most of the main characters. When I first watched it 2 of the  4 in the room got who Ben Parker is. Still no need to be 2 hours long.

Oh and btw this being set in 2003 NYC and having Ben Parker as a 30 year old we still have  a cameo from Spiderman.

The Blu Ray looks great sounds good. Has more than a few extras, that I haven't watched yet. Not worth the still 20 bucks they want for this. But it is better than Morbius an if you findd it cheap take a chance.

Madame Web gets a C+

2016 Comic Challenge 282 What If? Volume 02 #16

TITLE-What If volume 02 #16
PUBLISHER-Marvel

Ahh I so love What If. So it is a title I will grab anytime I find issues for cheap. Got this one at the local comic shop.It had been put into the cheap bins. So while digging through stacks of mid 90s glut stuff I found not only this issue but a small stack of Conan I didn't own.

The story starts off back during Uncanny X-men #137. While the X-men are fighting the Imperial Guard,to decide to fate of Jean "Phoenix" Grey. This happens on the part of the moon that the Watcher lives in. So during that original story Wolverine fell into a dimensional door and thanks to the Watcher breaking his code,Wolvie made it back and managed to get Jean back in charge of her body long enough for her to kill herself.

But in another world,Wolverine fell through a door on the moon and ended up back in the time of Conan the Barbarian. So that is the premise for this issue.

Wolvie and Conan of course meet up and have a battle, can't have some Marvel heroes meet up for the first time without them fighting can we?

After the battle Wolvie joins up with Conan and Red Sonja and they have an adventure. A pretty decent one to be honest.

Then at the end of the adventure Conan falls into a wizard's pool, which transports him back to the modern day, well the modern day of Uncanny #137,and since Wolvie isn't there to get Jean to take control of her body from the Phoenix Force, well Jean goes full on Phoenix Force and it looks like that world is doomed.

I have never heard of any of the creative team. But from what I have heard What If was used a bunch of the time as tryouts for new talent.Got Glenn Herdling doing the story.Gary Kwapisz on pencils. Ian Akin on inks. Yep no one I have heard of before.

What If volume 02 #16 gets a buy.

2016 Comic Challenge 276 Star Wars Droids #06

TITLE-Star Wars Droids #06
PUBLISHER-Star Comics an imprint of Marvel

In 86 Marvel's kid's line started up two Star Wars titles,Ewoks and Droids. Both of which seemed to be based on the cartoons of the same names.Years ago I found the above pictured issue in a cheap bin. I think I paid a buck.

It is the first part of a 3 parter. Which ended up being the final story arch in the Marvel Droids comic. In this arch we get the story of New Hope, but this time told from the POV of C-3PO and R2-D2.

This first issue is the only issue I have read of this comic. It isn't bad. Ernie Colon does the pencils,Marie Severin handles the inks and Dave Manak mans the writing.

Star Wars Droids #06 gets a borrow.

2016 Comic Challenge 275 Peter Parker The Spectacular Spider-Man #27

TITLE-Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-Man #27
PUBLISHER-Marvel

This beat but complete comic is one that I just kind of lucked into.Right at 10 years ago I was at a local auction, one that never had comics. And a guy tosses up 5 stacks of comics. Asking $5 for each stack. Each stack was about 40 issues but looked to mostly be 90s glut crap from Marvel and DC.No one was bidding so he dropped it to 3 a stack,no bids so asked for an offer. I said I give him 10 bucks for all 5 stacks and after some back and forth paid 13 bucks for what ended up being about 250 comics. In that stack of lots of glut crap was this issue.

So what makes this issue stand out from any other late 70s Marvel Spidey comic? Besides that really neat Dave Cockrum and Al Milgrom cover? Lets check the interior credits.
Hmm Bill Mantlo is the writer, and who is this as guest penciler? Frank Miller.... Yep so this has a cover date of Feb 78,which means it more than likely hit the stands in late 77. Which makes it the first time Frank Miller drew Daredevil!

I had heard of this issue for years. And even owned it 2 times before. But never read it. Mostly cause of fear of damaging it and I had gotten copies planning on selling them later on for a profit. But with the shape this copy is in,which even in this beat up shape checking the big two online retailers of comics it is still worth a few bucks,I finally read it.

Well after after almost 30 years of hype it doesn't live up to it. Sure it is kick ass to see early Miller art on not only Daredevil but also Spider-Man. And Mantlo does a decent job with the story. But for the price this issue sells for ,unless you luck out and get a beat up copy,it really isn't worth getting.

2016 Comic Challenge 268 Jessica Jones #01

TITLE-Jessica Jones #01
PUBLISHER-Marvel

Yeah I know my hatred of Bendis is fairly well known. But Alias, besides that horrible last few issues, was the best thing he has done since coming to Marvel. So I took a chance on what seems to be a proper follow up to Alias.

Going into this I don't know much of what happened to Jessica Jones since the end of Alias. I have heard she had a kid and married Luke Cage. Maybe even was a member of the Avengers. But I have kind of given up on most Marvel comics for right at 20 years now.

The art is gorgeous. Pretty sure this is the same person that did the art in Alias. And all the little nods to the usually Marvel universe are nice. But it is the dialogue and story that  caught my attention and has me eager the read the next issue.

2016 Comic Challenge 247 Nemesis #01

TITLE-Nemesis #01
PUBLISHER-Icon an imprint of Marvel Comics

I heard about this series when it was coming out. But expecting delays between  issues I waited till it was finished to get it. Then it ended up in the bottom of the stack for a bit.

A guy dressed all in white,Nemesis,is in Japan with some big shot cop hostage. Seems Nemesis loves taking down police.

Back in the States a hero cop from DC gets a note. Saying that he will die soon. And to prove his point Nemesis manages to ,by the air, take control of Air Force One. Then take the President hostage. But we get a few clues as to why Nemesis doesn't like cops. And that maybe this DC hero cop is connected to Nemesis's past.

Mark Millar shows me once again why I have been a fan of his work since his short run on Swamp Thing volume 1. Steve McNiven is a great artist.

Nemesis #01 gets a buy.

2016 Comic Challenge 220 Captain America #319

The issue starts off with Cap fighting Backlash. Backlash keeps running his mouth and that causes his downfall. While Backlash is being led away by the cops he mentions that someone has been going around killing lots of lower level super villains. I had noticed that in various Marvel comics I was reading at the time that someone, who's appearance changed each time, was killing off villains. Shooting them with explosive bullets and shouting "Justice is served!"

Cap thinks about this super villain killer and remembers that someone a few months back tried to kill the Constrictor. "Scourge,He called himself.I never was able to get any leads on him."

Then we see Sidewinder of the Serpent Society,if a title has Gruenwald writing it odds are good the Serpent Society will appear, holding the corpse of Death Adder. So that is another villain that Scourge has taken out.

Next scene is set in the so called Bar with no name. A bar for costumed super villains. Seems a bunch of the villains are forming a group to not only protect themselves from the killer but also capture/kill Scourge.

There is a nice interlude that mostly seems to be in the story to remind the readers that at this time Steve Rogers was doing the artwork for the 616 universe's Captain America comic. Yep Cap was drawing Cap for at least a few years in his own title.

We cut to the former Firebrand at the Bar with No Name. He is bragging to the bar tender about how he has been going  to all the Bars with No Names,I guess it is a very exclusive franchise, and has talked to over 100 villains. 50 of which are suppose to show up to the bar soon.

Now I normally do not do this ,but this is a comic that you should really not know the ending when reading it. So

SPOILER SPACE

Most of the rest of the issue is a build up to the final  few pages. We see the former Firebrand getting all kinds of  high tech scanning equipment brought into the bar. To make sure Scourge can't sneak in.

Let us see who all showed up. There is 18 in total, including Gary Gilbert the former Firebrand.

Steeplejack,Shellshock,Cyclone,Mind-Wave,Ringer,Hell-Razor,The Grappler,Rapier,Mirage,Jaguar,Turner D. Century,The Vamp,The Cheetah,Bird-Man,Commander Kraken,The Hijacker and Letha. As you can see this is a group of  jobber super villains. Before this issue I had heard of  maybe 7 of them.

They start to talk about how to deal with the problem of  Scourge and this happens......

Yeah! That is how you end an issue of a comic and make me haunt the K&B Drugs to get the next issue.

2016 Comic Challenge 212 Nighthawk #01

TITLE-Nighthawk #01
PUBLISHER-Marvel

This is the Nighthawk of JMS's revamping of the Squadron Supreme. I was enjoying that series until like lots of JMS's work it just kind of petered out without any kind of ending.

So now that Nighthawk is on the 616 Marvel Earth. He is attacking an warehouse owned by a white supremisist gang. Who is tracking guns and meth.

The art by Ramon Villalobos is really good. Nice amounts of detail plus a bit of darkness. David F Walker does an ok job with the story in this issue. I do wonder how this would read to someone that doesn't know this version of Nighthawk.

The cover above is one of the variants. Drawn by the great Bill Sienkiewicz. A guy I wish was doing a monthly series or something more than covers.

2016 Comic Challenge 209 Moon Knight #04

TITLE-Moon Knight #04
PUBLISHER-Marvel

Our group of 4 escapees get confronted by a cop. But Moon Knight/Marc sees him as Sobek. The cop ends up mortally wounding Jean-Paul/Frenchie. So Marc beats his head into the street.

Now down to 3 they make their way to a diner. Gena's Diner, which I remember from the Bill and Doug run on this series.Once she mentions her two sons I had a flood of memories of her in the original series.

Marc and Marlene leave the diner and are heading to the pyramid. They arrive and Marc is knocked in the back of the head by something. He turns to see who/what it was and is shocked to see Moon Knight.

Yeah this is getting really good. I do wonder how much longer before we get a proper answer to if this is all in Marc's head or if the Egyptian Gods are coming back.

Holy fuck is this getting good.

Marc,Crawley,Frenchie and the others are down in the subway/ancient Egyption temple. Khonshu shows Marc a way to get out, right when the Doc/Ammunt shows up with some orderlies. The group barely manages to escape. But something Marc sees causes him to doubt himself.

Off to the othervoid.Marc and Khonshu have a long discussion. Were Khonshu explains to Marc that his madness and mental instability are his greatest asset.

With this meta-physical pep talk over Marc runs off to meet up with his friends. They all end up meeting Anubis/a bus driver. Crawley pays Anubis's price of one soul to take them all away.

They reach a dock.Say their goodbyes to Crawley. Find a ladder and think that they are now in NYC. After making it to the surface they see winged people flying thru the skies and a huge pyramid in the middle of NYC.

This is one of the best Moon Knight series I have read since the original series.Lemire realizes that it is Marc's various mental illnesses that make him much much more than Marvel's Bat-clone.

2016 Comic Challenge 207 Moon Knight #02

TITLE-Moon Knight #02

Took me a bit to find and then read the second issue of this series. Marc/Moon Knight gets a visit from his power bestowing Egyption God. Who tells him that one of the other gods has crossed over and Marc has to prevent more from doing the same.

Back at the nut house Marc keeps on running into people from his past. Like Frenchie and etc. Then one of the other patients tells Marc they will escape that night. And to go down not up.

That night they make their escape. And end up in what appears to be an abandoned subway station. But instead of people in the subway cars they are packed with mummies.

2016 Comic Challenge 196 Kull volume 3 #09

TITLE-Kull Volume 3 #09
PUBLISHER-Marvel

Look at that cover. A cover so stunning it made me break one of my rules about buying comics at a con. I was digging through this one dealers longboxes.Nothing was priced so I figured he had one set price per issue. And the stuff I was seeing I figured he was gonna ask $5 a comic but I should be able to talk him down to 3 if I both a few. Well turns out the only thing I really wanted was this issue of Kull. All because of the Barry Smith cover.

So I asked the dealer what he wanted for it. "Let me look it up in the Overstreet."I made a rule years ago that any dealer that did that well they were not gonna get my business. But since the comic wasn't mint I thought maybe the guide would be in my favor. So I broke my rule. A few minutes later he has looked it up and guide price was $2. Score for me.

Sadly the interior pales when compared to the cover. John Buscema's pencils are really good. But they don't come close to that BWS cover. The story is OK. I have found that the Kull comics from Marvel are never that well written.

Kull volume 3 #09 gets a borrow, unless you find it cheap.

2016 Comic Challenge 188 Spiderman versus Wolverine

TITLE-Spiderman Versus Wolverine
PUBLISHER-Marvel Comics

It is odd what things will trigger forgotten memories. After getting about 10 pages into this comic all of the sudden I rememebered not only where I bought it. But my first time reading it.

It was 87 and while I was going to the comic shop in Biloxi once a month,I still got most of my comics at K&B Drugs in Pascagoula MS.

It was the best store in the area for comics. They not only had 2 spinner racks. But 2 other racks hanging on the walls.Plus they seemed to carry all the magazine sized comics.

I clearly remember buying this at K&B,and thinking $2.50 was a stupid high price but it had Wolverine fighting Spiderman so I had to read it. Then after leaving the drug store I went straight to Burger King grabbed something to eat and read the comic while eating.

Written by Christopher Priest, back when he was still Jim Owsley, and with Mark Bright doing the pencils and the great Al Williamson on inks. We get a bit of history on Wolverine.Someone ,at the time thought to be minor,in Spidey's cast dies. And there is a great fight in a graveyard between Spidey and Wolverine.

Looking back on it now while it was good no way was it worth $2.50 back then. And IIRC this comic quickly went up in price. Many a cons I would see it as a $10 wall book. But with some digging you can find a reader copy for a buck or 2 tops. Which is it totally worth.

Spiderman vs Wolverine gets a buy.

2016 Comic Challenge 172 Moon Knight #01

TITLE-Moon Knight #01
PUBLISHER-Marvel

So once again we get a revamping of Marc Spector, and another Moon Knight #01. This time with Jeff Lemire handing the writing.

What I gathered from this issue Marc is in the nut house. And from what we are told all the previous Moon Knight adventures were just doodlings in Marc's journal.

Then one day in the rec room Marc sees a news report on Moon Knight. Who the night before, while Marc was getting electroshock treatment, was out fighting Stained Glass Scarlett.

That night Khonshu speaks to Marc. And he makes an escape attempt. But the last page just leads us the reader into thinking Marc is just flat out insane.

Yeah this has caught my attention enough I will read at least 2 or 3 more issues. Kind of wanting to see where Lemire takes this Marc is insane angle.

2016 Comic Challenge 168 Kid N Play #09

TITLE- Kid N Play #09
PUBLISHER-Marvel

With the final issue of the pretty damn good KiD N Play comic we get a fun crossover with lots of the Marvel heroes.

Play has just lost his woman. So is staying in his room. Kid and another friend come over to cheer him up. And they brought a coupon for a free delivery pizza plus a stack of Marvel comics. Play tells them thanks but then asks them to leave.

A bit later Play is hungry so he orders the pizza. After pigging out on what looks like a great pizza Play falls asleep. And in his dreams is where the Marvel Heroes crossover starts.

First up Hulk knocks on Play's front door. Then punches Play so hard he flies way out of the city. And once Play gets out of the trench his body created on the landing,he runs into the early 90s X-men team.

Play gets away from them, but runs into Venom in the sewers.Who throws him away. He lands in another part of the sewers, where Wolverine,Punisher and Ghost Rider happen to be. The heroes fight over who gets to I guess kill Play, still not sure why the heroes all want to kill him.

Plays escapes the trio and makes it home. But pretty soon the Avengers,FF and X-factor surround his house. Using dream logic Play ends up in armor and armed with a lightsaber fighting himself. He wakes up from this dream and lets the readers know he is better now.

Kind of a neat but odd way to end this series. It reads a bit like the new Archie and Jughead comics read. In that it is written for a 14 year old or older, but can still be read by younger kids.

Kid N Play #09 gets a borrow.
