Library Booksale Haul March 2015

Dropped $4 this time. But grabbed 4 armfuls.

Another unofficial games strategy guide. Covering lots of SNES games. Each game gets at the most 3 sentences of strategies. So it isn't that helpful.

Read Lemons never lie late last year,it was written by Westlake under a pen name. I enjoyed it so figured for 10 cents I would take a chance on another book from him. Seems to be a comedy/mystery book.

Seems to be a horror/comedy novel. Never heard of the author,it would be cool if it was Mark Henry the pro wrestler. It had on the cover  Dollar General $1 price sticker. And later the day I bought this I saw copies at the run down Dollar General in the down town area.

The cover reminds me of the 5th Wild Cards novel. Hell when I saw it from a few shelves over I thought it was that book in hardcover. I was actually a fan of Clinton, but thought this would be a decent laugh.

And to counter balance the previous book I got this book. For various reasons I wasn't a fan of Mr Bush. I think the first time he ran I wrote in Jesse Ventura.Second time I wrote in Steve Rogers. Yep voted for a fictional character.

Thankfully I had a list of my dvds/blu rays with me. Checked it and I don't own Creepshow in any format. Haven't tried it out yet. But for 25 cents if it doesn't work I will display the box with the few other VHS I have held onto.

Yep 3rd month in a row I found a Buffy book. This is the first book of the series I got the last book of last month. I am hoping the second book in the series will show up. If not I will grab a used copy online.

Never seen the film, but I have enjoyed Priest's comic book work.

I love the movie. One thing I don't like about the book is it in in that over sized paperback form. Which makes shelving it a pain in the ass.

Been wanting to read more Thompson. Read Fear and loathing in Las Vegas years ago. But really don't remember much about it.

Remember in the early to mid 90s when Virtual Reality was the big thing various companies kept promising us? This appears to be the instruction book to a PC Virtual Reality headset. I haven't even looked to see if the discs mentioned on the upper right corner are in the book. And with how old this is I doubt they would work on any computer I have.

Years ago when I was working a job where they just needed a warm body sitting in a chair for 8 hour shifts I read at least 12 of the Cat Who mystery series. Until recently I had kind of forgotten about this series of fun books. This is as the cover states a guide to the series. It looked like someone gave the library an complete run of this series. Because besides this I found 20+ of the novels.

From the early 80s so I am sure it will be full of Cold War scare tactics.

When I saw this I thought Art was the guy who did Candid Camera. Turns out he did Kids say the darnest things. But I usually enjoy bios.

Sure I have read this before. But I don't own it. Grizzard was the last newspaper columnist I read. I was buying the Jackson county paper just to read his stuff. Once he passed I quit reading the newspaper.

A book about Hunter S THompson. So another Bio for cheap.

Library Booksale Haul Jan 2014

Overslept today, which was nice when I have been lucky to get more than 4 hours sleep since before X-mas. Got up grabbed a quick breakfast and had time to kill so went to see what the library booksale had.

Use to be the local library, which is the only one for THREE COUNTIES! Yeah think about that for a few minutes. This place is tiny and covers three entire counties.Anyways used to be they had a library booksale 2 or 3 times a year. And I have found some decent stuff at them. But starting sometime in 2014 they took a small section of the library and made it into a permanent booksale area. With a few bins of paperbacks,3 or so shelves full of hardbacks. Then boxes and bins full of unsorted books, vhs, cassettes, etc.

Was told the other day that they had just gotten in a big amount of new stock and it wasn't the normal stacks and stack of John Grisham,Fern Michaels or James Patterson stuff.

With the prices on books being super cheap I had just brought 10 bucks and maybe 4 bucks in assorted change. I had thought ahead and put a plastic bag in my back pocket. Thinking I would be grabbing lots of stuff.

After a quick glance at the new release shelf, where I saw nothing I wanted to read I walked over to the bins of paperbacks. The last time I was here to look not only was there 2 big wooden bins but at least 8 huge boxes of paperbacks under the bins. No boxes this time. But that just means I don't have to bend over and dig through dusty old boxes.

Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

Tried watching season 1 of the tv show and quickly got bored with it. Been avoiding the books since Martin hasn't finished the series yet. But I keep getting recommendations on the books from people who's opinions I trust. Gonna throw this one into the "Will read one day" pile. This copy looks brand new. No cracks on the spine. Really it looks like it was never read or even opened.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer The Angel Chronicles Vol 1 by Nancy Holder

8 years or ago Dollar Tree was overflowing with books from this series of Buffy novels. The ones I found and read were original stories. But this seems to be novelizations of 3 Angel-centric episodes.

The Murders in the Rue Morgue and The Gold Bug by Edgar Allen Poe

I love Poe. And this collection of two of his better short stories is great. Dating from the 70s it has pictures from the film versions of the two stories. I know there is better collections of Poe's stories.I mainly grabbed this one cause of the pictures.

Captain Shark Vol 1 Jaws of Death by Richard Silver

I just recently discovered the world of 60s and 70s Men's adventure novels. Stuff like The Executioner,The Remo Williams series and many many others. Even found a few blogs that contain fun reviews of these semi forgotten pieces of fiction. Never heard of Captain Shark. The cover caught my attention and I plan on trying to read this fairly soon.

Red by Jack Ketchum

FUCK YEAH!!! A Ketchum novel I don't own. Really I would have bought any Ketchum novel I found. But to find one I hadn't read. And one where I love the movie, made the trip worth it.This is going never the top of my unread horror fiction pile.

I then started looking at the shelves full of hardbacks. Lots of really old self help books.Bios on people I have never heard of. And a whole bunch of the Left Behind novels. But I did find two things.

The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub

I thought I owned this. Thankfully I keep a halfway complete booklist on my laptop. So I checked it and saw I didn't own this book at all. I would have preferred a paperback. But at least the dust jacket is in good shape. I checked and it isn't a first print. No joke if it had been I would have flipped it quickly on Abebooks or Amazon. Already read this book 2 times. Many many years ago. Will re-read it one day.For now it will join my ever rotating hardback shelf.

Spook Country by William Gibson

The only ex-library book in my haul. And one that I got a connection too. This copy comes from my local library. I checked it out the day they got it in. And every visit to the library I would see it sitting on the shelf. I kind of doubt it got checked out that much. Which would be why they are selling it. It is in perfect shape. From what I remember it was one of the Gibson novels that is set "3 years in the future". I enjoyed it but not as much as the Sprawl series or his other earlier works.

So I ended up doing pretty decent. Total cost was $1. I never saw any vhs, dvds, cassettes. Really all they had was paperbacks, hardbacks and a huge stack of magazines. I looked at the mags quickly and it was all Nat Geos, gardening stuff and other mags of that ilk.

Between what I got today and all the books/comics I got for the holidays I am covered until July. So if you are reading this and want to get me a birthday gift,July 10th,grab me a book. Or not,I don't give a fuck.

What cha reading for Wednesday 11/12/2014

Thanks to Eugene on Walking Dead I have been listening to lots of Bill Hicks recently. So I am attempting another regular feature here. That I will more than likely do 3 or 4 times get bored with it and never mention it again :P

At last count, over 2 years ago, I own over 400 books that I haven't read. And I am always buying new books. I can't pass up a decent looking book that is a buck or less. So I am attempting to read 20 books in 2 months. I have read 3 so far in November.

I am on page 169 of 221 of "Lemons never Lie". Which is written by Donald E. Westlake under his pen name Richard Stark.

Alan Grofield runs a summer stock theater in a tiny rural town. To get the money to keep the theater open he is the crowd control man for various groups of professional criminals. After opting out of a job early on in the novel, mostly because it just doesn't feel right,Grofield is desperate for money.

This is the first thing from Westlake/Stark I have read. I had heard of his series of Parker novels. Which is where Grofield first appeared. I did some research and there is 4 or 5 Grofield novels. With Lemons Never Lie being the final one. And it being sort of the oddball of the series. The previous ones have more of a humorous approach compared to Stark's Parker novels. This one has very very little humor. Each night for the past 3 nights before bed I have laid down and read a chapter or two. I love the fast pace of each chapter and have to force myself to put it down each night.

This novel is part of the Hardcase Crime line of paperbacks. While the cover price of $6.99 for a bit over 200 pages is high,I found this one for a buck at Dollar General. I see various books from this line at the dollar stores all the time. Never costing more than $1.25. For that price Lemons Never Lie is a hell of deal.

Capsule book reviews 001

Been doing lots of reading the past 4 weeks. Normally I will read for 20 or so minutes each night as I wait for my sleep meds to kick in.

Island by Richard Laymon

In Diberville MS there is this huge antique mall. And the back fourth of it is a used bookstore. Where it is normally 7 books for 5 bucks. Sometime 2 years ago I went in and grabbed this book and 6 others. Now I have read a bunch of Richard Laymon books before this one. And kept hearing how this is one of his best books. It is about a guy who is in college. His girlfriend invites him along on a family vacation. Where they are cruising the ocean. Through a series of what seems to be accidents they all get trapped on a small island. But quickly find out they are not alone on the island.

The book is told from the main guy's point of view. In that he is keeping a diary each day of what happens. This is a interesting way to convey the store.

As with every Laymon book I have read before, this one feels like a fun 80s era B-horror film. And as always it is full of lots of sleaze. If you are a fan of horror fiction and want something to read that isn't Stephen King or Clive Barker try out this book.Since Leisure fiction is pretty much out of business I have no clue who is currently publishing Laymon's stuff. But it shouldn't be hard to find a used copy.

Night in the Lonesome October by Richard Laymon

Now I had never heard of this novel. But with it being from Laymon I took a chance. Ed has just gotten a "Dear John" letter from his girlfriend. Wanting some time alone and to think,he goes off late at night to walk to a nearby bakery. And he learns that this small sleepy college town turns weird at night.

This is one of the most other there Laymon novels I have read so far. You got cannibalistic bums, crazy rapist stalkers and a young woman that loves to sneak into people's homes late at night.

I started reading this one night, planning on reading for 20 minutes then crashing out. Ended up reading almost half the novel that night. Night in the Lonesome October is one of the best novels from Richard Laymon that I have read so far. One warning,if you are the type of reader that wants everything explained and neatly wrapped up by the end, well skip this book. Richard leaves lots of stuff for you to figure out. Which is fine with me.

Berserk by Tim Lebbon

I had never heard of Mr Lebbon. But needed 3 more books to get the 7 novels for $5 deal. Saw this was from the Leisure Horror line. The description on the back sounded interesting. Plus I love the cover.

Set in the UK,this is the tale of a father. Who lost his son 10 years ago in a military accident. He finds out that what he was told was the cause of his son's death isn't true. And goes to investigate it. Where he learns about a secret military weapon nicknamed Bersekers. And we get a book that is one long chase.A very well written chase.

Looking through my collection of unread books I have another book that is 4 of Mr Lebbon's novellas. So I will check that out soon.

Fireworks by James A Moore

Another author I had never heard of. But it was published by Leisure Horror. And the blurb on the back sounded really good. I went into the novel expecting a horror novel about a UFO landing in a small Georgia fan. Figuring it would have touches of science fiction. What I got was a military intrigue novel.

On the 4th of July in this tiny ass hick town a UFO crashes in a lake. The US government is quickly sent in. They seal off the town. And thing escalate from there. This story really reminds me of an average episode of X-files. And has a couple of neat twists. Where there is 3 main chapters in the novel. With each chapter focusing on one person.I did enjoy the novel and from the little research I have done,it seems that Mr Moore has written some straight up horror novels.

The Walking Dead:The Road to Woodbury by Robert Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga

I love Walking Dead. Both the comic book, and no it isn't a graphic novel, and the tv show. I heard about the first novel in this series, which is the back story of the man that became the Governor. I found that one for $5 and took a chance on it. Fucking loved the book and couldn't wait for this novel.

Well I had forgotten about it. Was in town and looking at the new books. Found this novel for $6. Started reading it a few days later, honestly while it isn't a bad novel,it isn't that good either. Where as the first novel focused on the Governor, this one is about a group of 5 survivors in Georgia.I get that this novel was suppose to show fans of the comic, which is the world this novel seems to be set in, and the tv show more backstory on how Woodbury came to be. But that info could have been told in 3 chapters and the rest of the novel could have been more about the Governor and Woodbury. Hell until over halfway through the book we don't see the Governor or head about Woodbury. So unless you are a die hard fan of the Walking Dead, either get this used or check it out from the library.

Top 5 Kids books

5.Endless Quests books
I had at least 9 of these books when I was a kid. They were the TSR/Dungeons and Dragons versions of the mega popular choose your own adventure books. By the time I was 8 I had started playing Advanced Dungeons and Dragons with some friends. So having a game-book version of it was right up my alley.

4.Thirteen ways to sink a sub
I got this book from the school book fair when I was in 4th or 5th grade. The plot is simple. The 4th grade class has their first substitute. So they plan on making her cry. I must have read this book 2 or 3 times a year for years. There is at least 3 more books in this series.

3.Monster of the year
Another book I got from the book fair. The cover grabbed my eye. 2 kids get a billboard for their birthdays. So they make a mock ad for a Monster of the Year contest. Then all kinds of classic monsters start showing up. It is another I read over and over and over. I am tempted to track down a copy.

2.Choose your own Adventure books
When I was in elementary school the CYOA books were hot. Everyone read them. I had over 40 of them back then. I ended up giving them all away. Which I regret now. So any time I see used books I look for CYOA books. And got about 20 of them now.  CYOA are game-books like the Endless Quests novels. But CYOA are known for having some great endings. Most of the books had maybe 2 good endings and the rest were all bad. You would end up dying in graphic ways.

1.The Thief of Always
Now this novel I didn't read as a kid. Because it didn't get published until I was in my 20s. When I heard about it I was wondering "What the fuck a kids book written by Clive Barker." And the book turns out to be as twisted as you would expect a kids novel written by Mr Barker to be. A young boy runs away. And discovers this house that is paradise for a kid. For years now I have heard that the novel is being made into a film. But so far nothing has come out of that.

Newt's trip to Vendor's Emporium

Didn't have much to do today, plus didn't feel like just hanging around the house. So I got in the car and drove to town to grab some lunch. After eating I realized I haven't been in Vendor's Emporium in about a month. It is sort of an indoor flea market. There is booths and you bring whatever you want to buy up to the front.

Located on highway 51,it is in a dying strip mall.

As you can see from the smaller white sign, they have fresh fudge and the smell of it hits you as soon as you enter the building. There is basically three long rows. So I usually start on the far left and work my way down each row.

The first few booths had furniture or clothing. There is a local line of women's clothing called Mississippi Girls. And each of the shirts has some stupid saying on the back. Like "Mississippi Girls know how to cook fish!" I want to make one that says "Mississippi Girls like to wear t-shirts with stupid stuff written on them".

Then I saw a booth that had books and various other stuff. Now one small problem is some of these booths are tiny. And the interesting stuff is always near the floor. I was looking at one side of the booth, lots of self help books and books on the perfect deer call, then I turned around and found the first thing that caught my attention.
It's an oldish Snoopy drinking glass. I know I one similar to this when I was younger. I almost bought it but the price was $8 which is way more than I wanted to pay.

I moved onto the next booth. Now this booth always has some toys. Usually some action figures and other stuff. I got a DC Universe Powergirl figure here last year for $4. Well there was no Powergirl stuff here this time. But I found something almost as good.
An old beat up but still on the card Sporty Spice action figure. It is hard to tell from the picture but to me it looks like some of her teeth are missing. So I dubbed her Crackhead Spice. Plus they wanted $5.99 for this. If it was a buck or 2 bucks I might have grabbed it. Also to the right of Crackhead Spice you can sorta see some kind of CSI board game. Never been a fan of CSI so I didn't bother looking closer at it.

So I put Crackhead Spice back on the shelf, realizing she was shelved right below a hung amount of deodorant. And turned to my left. There was the old school toy aisle pegboard. You know the kind with the metal bars they would hang the action figures on. And what do I see but ....
GHOST RIDER POGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The package contains 6 "Skull Caps" and 1 "Vengeance Slammer". Plus it's only 2 bucks. I was very tempted to buy this. But I realized I better save up my money for my trip to the coast later this month. So back on the peg it goes. But there was more goodies on the pegs.
LT.Stone from GI JOE Extreme. Yep from when GI Joe got an image make over. I always hated these figures and no way am I gonna pay $11 bucks for it. But wait there was more action figures.
From the "classic" film Waterworld it is Power Bow Mariner. And it only cost $7. But my hatred for Kevin Costner won't allow me to own any action figures of him. Then I noticed something on the shelf below Crackhead Spice.
Each tube has 10 Skull caps and 1 slammer. There was Ghost Rider and Spider-man themed tubes. $5 each. Was tempted to get one. But really it would just collect dust on my shelf.

So I turn to my right and see two great items. Both of which I wanted but the prices kept me from buying. First up is this.

A really nicely made Universal Monsters Mummy figure. The package was still in decent shape. But it was $20 and I only had maybe 12 bucks on my total. Next time I go in if it is still there I will end up buying it. Then to the right of the Mummy was this.

A Grifter vs Daemonite two pack of Wildcats figures. It even comes with a mini and full sized comic. The box has some slight damage. But still looks decent. And it was only 15 bucks.  Oh well maybe next trip I can get it. Then I see something out the corner of my eye. On the same shelf as all the deodorants.
This is one of the mid 90s Trendmasters Tarzan figures. This same booth for over 2 years had some of the figures on the card. I assume that maybe some kid opened it and now poor Tarzan is stuck in a box with a monkey. It want to say the price was $5.99 for it. Which is ridiculous.

Well I headed onto the next booth. This one was mostly glasses and mugs. But there was a few interesting items . Like this,I really have no idea what to call it.
And then there was this.
A Pschorr mug from Germany. It was only 2 bucks but I really have no need for a mug, so I passed on buying it. But finally this booth provided me with something great. Something that made me feel like I was 5 again. And it was Saturday morning, and I am sitting there in my Star Wars PJs drinking Chocolate milk while watching Superfriends.

Henry Hawk and Foghorn Leghorn playing Tennis. I had this exact glass when I was a kid. They were $5 and I was tempted to grab one. But the issue is finding a place to store it. But since as you can see they have 6 if I change my mind I can always go back and get one. Well that was all this booth had so I moved onto the next one.

Well to be honest the next booth had nothing I would buy. But had 2 items that made me chuckle. First there was this.
It's a cute little item but it cost $5 which is way too high. Then there was this item.
Yes Monkey Farts scented candles. It was almost tempting enough to pay the $3 to see what it smelled like. I tried sniffing the package but couldn't smell anything. But it stood out cause all the other candles were like strawberry, lilac, etc. But here was MONKEY FARTS! There was one amazing item in this booth but I am saving that for the end of the post.

So I head down the aisle some more. Seeing lots of clothing and cook books. And huge amounts of caseless over priced VHS. Common stuff they wanted $8 each for. Stuff like Titanic,Matrix, etc.

Then I found what I have dubbed the camo booth. If you want something in camo they have it.
Camouflage playing cards, cause you know when you are hunting and are bored you want a deck of camo cards to play solitaire with. Plus with them being camo the deer can't see them!
Sorry the picture is a little blurry. But it is pink camo band aids! I figure these are for the lady hunters. But male hunters don't feel left out.
Yep they got regular Camo bandages too. Want to say these were $3 a box. I have no idea if that is a good price or not. Mainly cause I haven't bought bandages in years. But they do come in metal tins. But the camo booth had one more item that stood out. One that I am tempted to buy my father for his birthday in a few months.
A deer lamp with deer lamp shade. I didn't look at the price but I am betting it is 30 bucks or more. Dad always wants a lamp by his chair for when he reads so this would be perfect for him.

Well I am at the end of the far left row. I skip most of the middle row, mainly cause it is all clothes and furniture. And I head to the far right row. About a third of this row is taken up by one booth. The owner goes to estate sales and auctions and buys stuff to resell. I have met him a few times and gotten some great deals from him. I started in the back corner and found this.
He had no markings on him to tell me what toy company put him out. So I assume he is some kind of  "grocery store warrior". "Grocery Store Warrior" is a term a friend of mine came up with for those generic knockoff action figures you find at grocery stores and Dollar Tree and such. To me he looks like a roided up CM Punk. But even with that I wasn't gonna spend a buck to get him. I moved farther down the booth. To where this guy keeps his box of comics. It is 10 comics for $7. Well I couldn't find 10 to buy. And if you don't get 10 it is a buck each. Most of the stuff was really beat up copies of 80s New Teen Titans, Fury of Firestorm,JLA and Legion of Superheroes. All good series but all stuff I already own. But I did find 4 interesting comics. That I was tempted to buy. Up first.
I can remember watching this cartoon on Sunday mornings. Then my Mom taking me and my cousin to see Get Along Gang on Ice. It is the first issue and I do sorta collect the Marvel Star comics imprint. But I didn't want to drop a buck on a comic I doubt I would ever read. But there was another comic from Star Comics. One that really tempted me.
Issue 9 of the Ewoks comic. I think maybe Dark Horse has reprinted this series. I do have all the Droids issues. But lost my Ewoks issues a few years back. But I decided to pass on this one. Now the next comic is one I owned when I was 9 or so.
This is the first issue of the Atari Force mini comic. They came with various Atari 2600 games. Pretty sure I had every issue when I was younger. Later on DC published a full sized Atari Force comic that is supposed to be really good. I have never read it. As you can see the owner of this booth put his price sticker right on the cover. Sometimes you can remove the sticker without damaging the cover. I tried on this on and it started ripping the cover. So I put it back. And now one final  comic.

Mickey and Goofy explore the Universe of Energy. This came out in 1985 and was given away at Exxon's pavilion inside EPCOT. I again almost bought this, but as you can see the price sticker is on the cover. Again I tried to remove it and again it was starting to damage the cover. So I put the comic back in the box. Normally the box is packed so full of comics you can barely dig through it. But this time it was 3/4th empty. I am hoping next trip there is more comics.

Well the rest of the far right row is all candles, clothes and crap I have no interest in. But in the middle of the middle row there is a booth that always has an assortment of hardback and paperback books for cheap. I walked over there. And found this.
It was $3, which is way too much for something like this. But I love how on the cover Dracula looks like he is drunk as shit. He looks like he has been on a 3 day bender of nothing but Mike's Hard lemonade!

I did find two books I wanted. And each was 50 cents. But there was  a group of people around me so I moved to another booth to take the pictures. First up is this neat looking paperback.
Written by John Farris "The Captors" was published by Tor Horror and came out in 1985. But this isn't the first time the story has been published. It has a copyright date of 1969. And like with most paperback horror novels in the mid 80s it has a cover blurb by Stephen King. "America's premier novelist of terror!" I figured what the hell the cover is cheesy and it's only 50 cents. If it sucks I can trade it in for $2 store credit at the used bookstore. Then on a lower shelf I found this great hardcover.

Prime Evil is a collection of horror short stories. Edited by Douglas E, Winter it was published by New American Library in 1988. And listen to this line up of authors and stories.

The Night Flyer by Stephen King-I know this has been republished in one of King's short story collections.
Having a Woman at Lunch by Paul Hazel
The Blood Kiss by Dennis Etchison
Coming to Grief by Clive Barker
Food by Thomas Tessier
The Great God Pan by M. John Harrison
Orange is for Anguish, Blue for Insanity by David Morrell
The Juniper Tree by Peter Straub
Spinning tales from the Dead by Charles L. Grant
Alice's Last Adventure by Thomas Ligotti
Next time you'll know me by Ramsey Campbell
The Pool by Whitley Strieber
By reason of darkness by Jack Cady

Not a bad line up and best part it was 50 cents.

But there is the one item that stood out over everything else. Better than Henry Hawk and Foghorn Leghorn glasses, better than an over priced action figure of Crackhead Spice.Better than pink camo bandages!

An Elvis cuckoo clock!!!! I could never get the doors to open so I have no idea what pops out when it strikes the hour. I am hoping it is big fat Elvis. Notice that below it is the pendulum and other stuff. Plus there is a certificate talking about how this is a limited edition. And whatever company made it was only gonna make them for 295 days! Now I am sure you are asking "WOW Newt how much for such a stunning piece of awesomeness?"

$150

Yep $150 for a clock that everything but the pendulum is made out of plastic. $150 for a "limited edition" clock that I bet there was 100 of thousands made. If this had been say $10 I would have grabbed it, just for how cheesy and horrible it is. But $150! No way.

So I headed up the counter paid for my books and the lady running the cash register offered me a piece of fudge. But I was still stuff from lunch. I didn't do bad. Most times I go here I drop at least 10 bucks. So only spending a little over a buck is great. Well I hope everyone enjoyed my trip to Vendor's Emporium. I might wait a few months and do another one. Maybe the price on the Elvis cuckoo clock will drop and I can talk myself into buying it.
