31 Days of Horror 2025 Day 26 Creepy Koffee Movie Time Last Call

TITLE-Creepy Koffee Movie Time Last Call
SOURCE-NovemberFire DVD

Months back I had heard NoName and Balrok were doing one last appearance,at a screening of a new documentary done about the Creepy Koffee Movie Time show. Short version CKMT was a weekly horror host show on KOFI TV in San Francisco. They aired old horror films and had on guests.

Once a DVD release of the Documentary was available I ordered one and have now watched it two times. First time was the night I got it. Went sat out on  the pier,it was dark and quiet and I had a blast. This second time was earlier today.

CKMT Last Call covers in fairly decent amount of detail every episode of the show. Broken down  by seasons. With Balrok interviewing guest and the various ladies that were Cave Girls on the show. What are Cave Girls? They would have 3 to 5 each episode on the stage usually dancing along to whatever music the house band was playing.

One of the Cave Girls in the later seasons was former WWE Superstar Shotzi Blackhart. Who describes the show perfectly. And I can't say how she does or this post would get the mature content warning and as of writing the state I live in has decided I can't see mature content online without giving a copy of my photo ID.

Back to the show. I loved seeing how No Name evolved over the sseasons. All I have ever see is the first 5 seasons. Cause that is all that is out there streaming. There was 10 or 11 seasons total. With the later seasons seems like they got more films they had to license.

Sure this documentary would not mean much if you arent familar with the show. Me I'm a big fan. Seen most of the episodes from the first 5 seasons. Earlier this year read the fan book about the show.

31 Days of Horror 2023 Day 22 Sisters of Death(Creepy Koffee Movie time)

TITLE-Sisters of Death

SOURCE-Creepy Koffee Movie Time on Amazon Prime Video

Might have been last year or the year before I discovered Creepy Koffee Movie Time on Amazon Prime Video. It was a Horror Host tv show that aired in San Francisco for 5 seasons. Now they got a pile of the episodes up on Amazon Prime Video. When I first discovered them the episodes were free. Now it is 99 cents to buy an episode.

Creepy Koffee Movie time is hosted by Balrock and No Name. Balrock is a gargoyle and No Name is a ghoul. They live in a basement. And each week they show a horror film. Most episodes you got 2 or 3 alt rock ladies there dancing. Plus the house band the Deadites. And they will bring on a local comedian to tell a few jokes. All the episodes of the show on Amazon Prime are for films that are public domain or assumed to be.

And this episode from season 5 the guys show the mid 70s cult classic Sisters of Death. A film that if it wasn't one of the few movies with Claudia Jennings this film would be forgotten.

Movie starts with a sorority doing their hazing. They are making the pledges play Russian Roulette. But someone has replaced the fake bullet with a real one.So one of the girls gets shot.

Skip ahead 10 years and now all the sorority girls are invited to a reunion. None of them notice as they get to the home hosting the reunion that the place is surrounded by a high fence that is electrified.

And one by one the girls die. Until we learn who is behind all this. Being a horror film  of course one lady survives. Her and one of the guys escape. Then of course we get a twist ending that really doesn't make sense.

The movie is odd. It played theaters. But feels like a made for tv movie from the 70s. There is no cussing,no gore and surprisingly no nudity. Which is odd for a film with Claudia Jennings in the cast.

The host segments are great. Get a fairly funny stand up comedianne. A decent dance break where the Deadites play and the alt rock girls dance. Then near the end Annie Cruz shows up to offer some relationship advice.

I have always loved horror hosts. Since I first discovered Sgt Graves back in I am guessing it was 1980. And I like how Balrock and No Name keep this show skirting that "can we do this on OTA tv?" line. Did some research and it seems almost every season the show was airing there was at least one episode that got aired once and never aired again cause KOFY,the channel that aired the show, got a pile of complaints.

The host segments feel like it is 2am. Everybody just got home from the bar/club. And now to relax you all just want to sit there watching a cheap maybe shitty horror film and crack jokes.

By itself Sisters of Death is nothing really. A fun diversion but nothing most would watch again. But add in Balrock and No Name and it makes it much better

Creepy Koffee Movie Time Airing of Sisters of Death gets a B-

31 Days of Horror 2020 Day 12 Carnival Of Souls Creepy Koffee Movie Time airing

TITLE-Carnival of Souls

SOURCE-Amazon Prime Creepy Koffee Movie Time airing

I'm fairly sure most people that read my annual 31 Days of Horror reviews at least knows of Carnival Of Souls. With the proliferation of cheap Public Domain Movies on DVD,lots of people own this movie. So while I will go into the film some I am gonna spend more time on Creepy Koffee Movie Time.

Starting back in the 2000s in the San Francisco Bay area, and airing on Over the Air channel KOFI,Creepy Koffee Movie Time is one of the best modern horror host programs. Hosted by Balrok and No Name, plus house band The Deadlies, this program shows the same Public Domain movies that pretty much every modern horror host airs. What makes CKMT stand out is the feel of the show. Airing late at night the hosts make you feel like it is midnight on a Saturday, you have been drinking for at least  a few hours and got a few friends over to watch some old horror movies.

Like with most horror host shows in the modern era the succeed or fail on the charisma of their hosts. And charisma is one thing both Balrok and No Name have in abundance.

Balrok is either a gargoyle or some kind of demon. But he is way more interested in drinking, watching goth or punk women dance, listening to some stand up comedy and getting sex tips from Annie Cruz. In this first episode of season 1 Balrok's makeup and outfit are fairly cheap. But look much better than makeup you will see on some low budget DTV horror movies.

No Name is I'm guessing some kind of ghoul or zombie.Bald, pasty white and him being a bit slow are why I lean towards Zombie/Ghoul. No Name is also the one you can count on to make a few jokes or references that I've heard got the show in trouble with KOFI.

That is another thing that makes CKMT stand out. Most modern horror host programs are aimed at everyone. For example Svengoolie markets his show to families. And I know of a few families that sit and watch Sven together. Elvira's most recent show was aimed at kids and the older folks that grew up on Elvira in the 80s. But CKMT is obviously aimed at people 16 and older.

What makes me say this? Well there is so many things. First off the previously mentioned goth and/or punk women that are always on the set. Usually wearing as little clothing as can be allowed on a show carried over the airwaves. The various jokes the two hosts make are not the normal "nudge nudge wink wink" slightly racy jokes most hosts make. And finally most episodes they have on Porn Star Annie Cruz to give sex advice.

Plus going to the show's merch website it appears they had at least one episode each season that only aired once. All cause KOFI got too many complaints about stuff No Name said.

I'm sure by now yall, that haven't seen it before, are wondering "How is Carnival of Souls?" Out of all the horror films in the public domain,Carnival of Souls is one of the best. While it's low budget origins are all over the film, the crew did so much with so little.

Being in B/W adds another layer to the oddness of the film. Same with the cast. The lead is Candace Hilligoss.

Who was a model before becoming an actress for a short while, she has about 5 roles credit to her. Mrs Hilligoss not being a polished actress gives her performance  this off beat feel that just adds to the over-all  weird feel of the film.

The other stand out in the cast is Herk Harvey. Like many directors of low budget cinema Herk took on many jobs. Herk produced, directed and was the lead antagonist in Carnival of Souls. He is the lead ghoul

and his look in this film has been homaged, parodied and just flat out stolen by so many generations of horror fans.

Yea I know there is a few of yall reading this thinking "OK asshole I have never seen this movie. Stop rambling and give us the plot."

After a accident during a drag race in Kansas the lead played by Candace moves to SLC Utah. Candace gets a job playing the organ for a church. The further into the film we get the more and more odd stuff happens. Like how Herk appears as a ghoul.

And just when the viewer is thinking the film can't get any weirder Herk tosses us a twist ending.

From what I have found online this movie wasn't a hit when it came out in 62. Then cause of it being public domain it started getting aired often late at night UHF channels. Thru these airings it became one of the biggest cult horror films from the early 60s. Thanks to it's cult following Criterion put out an amazing DVD of this film. With a print that looked better than the film has looked since it's first theatrical screening. And the DVD is loaded with great extras.

After seeing how good Creepy Koffee Movie Time was with their first episode I knew I was gonna watch more. And as of this writing Amazon Prime has 5 seasons of the show.

Carnival of Souls Creepy Koffee Movie Time airing gets a A-.

Carnival of Souls by itself gets a B+.

31 Days of Horror 2020 Day 11 Blood Sucking Freaks

Title-Blood Sucking Freaks

Source-Joe Bob's Last Drive In Airing

Oh man another year and another great batch of episodes from Joe Bob.  This is one of those films that was whispered about on the school yard. Somehow one kid had gotten to see it. And he told everyone. Which lead to other kids claiming "Yea I saw it the other night on HBO." or my favorite "You know Channel 15 shows uncut movies at 2am Sunday morning? Yea They showed Blood sucking Freaks and I spit on your grave last week. They dont list they right films in the tv guide so Channel 15 doesnt get in trouble with the cops." Man I'm betting you don't have crazy stories like this now on schoolyards. Kids can just pull out their cell and look stuff up now.

But back to Blood Sucking Freaks,Sometime in 94 or 95 we found a copy to rent at this great video store. You know the kind of video store, was ran by a dude that loved horror and cult movies. The kind of store that in that timeframe made sure to stock copies of Nekromantik and Traces of Death. The store where once the owner got to know you he would recommend films. And to top all that his extremely cute tall hippie daughter worked there. And she was a hardcore explotation film nut.

So yea we rented it. Called everyone over to watch it. Made it a BYOB movie watching event. Had a houseful of people. And sure if anyone got grossed out and had to leave the room they caught some shit.

While it was great to finally see this much talked about film, the tape looked like ass. Not only was it the normal fullscreen crap. Cause the tape was older and had been rented many many times the picture and sound was badly degraded.

The brainsucking thru a straw scene had that look to it which told ya many people had rewound, slow motioned and paused that scene. Kinda like how back in the day when you rented Fast Times at Ridgemont High and you got to the Phoebe Cates pool scene, the picture quality took a major drop from all the pausing and slow moing that had been done to that part of the tape.

Here I am happy that I finally got to see this cult classic film. Then disappointed that the tape looked so bad. When I returned the tape I asked the hippie daughter if they could order a copy."I know tapes aint cheap but I really want to see it fresh out the shrinkwrap." She took down my home number and a few weeks later she called. Told me the tape was currently out of print. "I can get you a like new copy from Video Oyster up north for 80 dollars." Yea ain't gonna drop that much on the film. Thanked her and hung up.

And pretty much forgot about Blood Sucking Freaks for decades. Ended up getting the Troma DVD. So got to see a slightly better version of the film. What was up with so many of the Troma DVDs looking janky?

The film is pretty much a series of gore set pieces. Sure there is a skeleton of a plot. A crazed maniac puts on an way way way off Broadway stage show. Like the Grand Gungol in France. But he is really maiming and killing people.

The gore is well done for the era. And is the main reason this film developed a devoted cult following. Then add in the wackiness of the cast.

With the midget being the stand out. So many metal/punk/alt rock bands have used quotes from the midget in their music.

The Joe Bob Last Drive In airing looks and sounds great. Way better than the Troma DVD or that old ass VHS. And it is obvious that Joe Bob is a huge fan of the film. He provides plenty of info about the film. As a neat bonus Joe Bob had on Chris Jericho. For those that don't know who Jericho is,he is a pro wrestler that also is the lead singer of the band Fozzy. Jericho is a huge fan of Blood Sucking Freaks. And even wrote a song about it that he premiered on Joe Bob's Last Drive In.

I like Blood Sucking Freaks. And want a nice blu ray of it.But I also know it isn't a film for everyone. And it is a film I feel the need to see at most every 5 years.

Joe Bob's Last Drive In airing of Blood Sucking Freaks is a solid A.Between Joe Bob and the normal cast's info and thought on the film and the added bonus of Chris Jericho they took a slightly above average film and made it much better.

With out all the stuff from Joe Bob and the gang... Blood Sucking Freaks gets a B-.

31 Days of Horror EXTRA 01

Anyone who reads this blog knows I love horror hosts. And the best of the modern horror hosts is Joe Bob Briggs.

When cable finally made its way out to the rural hellhole I grew up in I paid 10 bucks a month for The Movie Channel, just so I could watch Joe Bob's weekly show.  Sure Monstervision is better known. But on Monstervision the films were edited for TV and packed full of commercials . His TMC show was uncut and sooo good. On a old VHS I still have all 5 nights of Joe Bob's Emanuelle week. Every night at 10pm he showed one of the many Emanuelle films.

A bit over a year ago word got out that Shudder,a AMC owned horror streaming service, was bringing Joe Bob back.  In what was suppose to be a 1 time thing. Joe Bob showed 4 films and the audience was so large it crashed Shudders servers. Last year around Xmas Shudder had another Joe Bob marathon.  This time he showed Phantasm 1,3,4 and 5. This did even better than the first marathon. So Shudder started up a weekly Joe Bob show.

Known as The Last Drive In. Every Friday at 8pm central Joe Bob does a double feature. Before the film Joe gives us some history of the film he is about to show.  And like the TMC  show the films are uncut without commercials. Usually 4 or 5 times during the film it cuts back to Joe Bob. Where he gives us more info on the film . And sometimes he will interview someone from the film.

The picture at the top is from when Joe Bob was showing the 80s slasher cult classic Sleepaway Camp. He has Felissa Rose, who played Angela in the film,on and interviews her.

Now I have seen Sleepaway Camp many times. And the print used in this airing isn't the slightly cut print that Anchor Bay used. And it isn't that weird hybrid cut print that IFC aired often in 2008 through 2013,you remember back when IFC was a good channel and wasn't just another channel showing Fucking Law and Order 23 hours a day. Nope Joe Bob showed a fully uncut print of Sleepaway Camp. During part of the interview with Me Rose the both let it slip that New Line Cinema is working on a new Sleepaway Camp Film. Hope it actually comes out.

Since mid April if I am home on Friday night I watch an episode of The Last Drive In.

31 Days of Horror Day 12 Bad Taste

Title-Bad Taste
Source-Count Gore Devol's airing on Vimeo

Ahhhh Bad Taste, the first film and first movie I saw from a guy who is one of my favorite director,Mr Peter Jackson. I had heard about the movie thanks to Fangoria and a few horror zines I read. I was on my way home from school on a Friday. Had just spent most of Chemisty II class reading an article in Fangoria about Peter Jackson's newest film Dead/Alive AKA Braindead. A buddy had told me that this one video store had just gotten in a bunch of horror films. So I stopped by to see if there was anything worth renting. This store ,that I later found out got shut down cause it was renting bootlegs, never had more than one copy of any film. But they had a huge horror, sci fi and porn selection. Seriously I could find pretty much any horror film that was on VHS at this store. I went in and headed straight for the horror section. Saw the above image and grabbed it cause I knew it was a film I had been reading about for years now.

I got home. Put the tape into my VCR and right at 90s minutes I sat there with my jaw on the floor. I had seen gore movies before this. But none of them had as much comedy. Or were made on such a low budget. Then right at the very end the tape stopped and started rewinding. This is when I started to suspect the video store was renting out bootlegs. Almost none of the tapes you rented from them had the FBI warning or a bunch of trailers before the film started. A friend swears he rented some Euro softcore film from the same store and saw the Cinemax After Dark logo pop up a few times. So I was a bit mad that I didn't see the entire film. But really going back now I see that all I missed was the credits.

The plot is fairly simple. Aliens have come to Earth. They want humans to serve as the food in their intergalactic fast food places. And Peter Jackson and some friends are the Earth's only defense.

Mr Jackson shot this film over a long period of time. With himself and various friends playing all the roles. And sometimes not being able to shoot footage cause they were out of money. It was mostly made on the weekends.

What sucks is AFAIK it hasn't gotten a Blu Ray release in the USA. The legit DVD release doesn't look that great and is OOP. I figured once Jackson hit it big with the Lord of the Rings films, fuck I hate those movies, that all his previous stuff would get re-released on DVD. But that doesn't seemed to have happened.

Notice how I said legit DVD release. Somehow a few companies seem to think Bad Taste, which was released in 1987,is in the public domain. So it has shown up on a handful of those multiple horror movie sets. You know like 50 Chilling Classics on 10 DVDs for only 20 bucks. The versions of Bad Taste found on those sets looks worst than the bootleg VHS I rented back in 90 or 91.

What is even odder is early this year Count Gore DeVol aired Bad Taste on his Vimeo show. Count Gore is a horror host that used to be on TV in the DC area. And in the early 2000s switched over to being online. Every week or so you get a new film from him. And it is free to watch. I am guessing whoever picks the movies for his show saw Bad Taste on those PD horror sets and just assumed the film is PD. The print Count Gore used looks decent. It looks as good if not better than the officially released DVD. And hell it is free. Added bonus if you have the Vimeo app you can download videos off Vimeo to watch offline. Whenever I am making a road trip I always load up a few Count Gore episodes on  my Tablet to watch while in the van going to what ever tiny town we are heading to.

I love this movie. But then I love all of Jackson's pre-LOTR stuff. Sadly it looks like the days of him making amazing horror/comedies is over. I thought after the huge success of LOTR Jackson would use that to get a big budget and make the best horror/comedy ever. But nope we got a decent but un-needed remake of King Kong. Then the horrible Hobbit trilogy.

Since the DVD is OOP and selling for too much if you want to see this goto Vimeo and watch Count Gore's airing of it.

Bad Taste gets a B+.

31 Days of Horror Day 11 The Blob(Original 1958)

Title-The Blob(Original 1958)
Source-MeTV Svengoolie airing

Months back,I think it was in May I saw that Svengoolie was gonna air the original Blob. So I made sure to save that airing on the DVR. I DVR Sven every week. But usually end up just watching his host segments, mostly when it is films I don't care for. Or end up building up 10 or more episodes on the DVR and put them on when I clean the house from top to bottom.

As normal with when Sven airs a film he fills his segments with trivia about the movie.I knew that the lead male was Steve McQueen. But had no clue that the lead female was later Andy's love interest on the Andy Griffith show.

Now I have heard various people talk about how cheesy the original Blob is. And yea it is. But for it's time and being a indy film with a tiny budget it is way better than it should have been. The FX work is decent. But it wasn't until the remake from the late 80s/early 90s that we got to see a fully realized version of what the Blob could do.

Steve McQueen and his gal pal are up on a hilltop watching for shooting stars. They see one,and it turns out to be a meteorite. An old man pokes it with a stick and this glob what appears to be strawberry jelly comes out. And ends up eating the man.

The rest of the film is a 30 year old or older, suppose to be in his late teens,Steve McQueen trying to convince the cops and other adults that something is up. I do wonder why Steve got cast to play a much younger person. He looks like he is in his 30s. But then McQueen always looked about 30,even in his final years. The cops think this is all a prank the local teens are playing. So they do nothing until almost the end of the film.

There is 2 real setpieces in the film. The first is when the Blob attacks a packed theater. It is a bit after midnight and the theater is having a Spook Show!!!. So it is packed with teens and young adults. The Blob comes in thru the vents and attacks. This same theater still exists and will show the Blob once a year as a charity event.

The other big set piece is near the end, people are trapped in a building that the Blob has engulfed. And this is were we learn that the Blob hates the cold.

Honestly if you are under 30 and have already seen the remake skip this movie. It is one of those movies that is very of it's time. And I get the feeling that if McQueen wasn't in the movie it would be another forgotten 50s horror.

For being a lower budget indy film I was shocked at how good the colors looked. The red of the Blob stands out. The FX work is pretty good. With most of the mat lines and forced perspective shots not being super obvious. The acting isn't bad. McQueen of course is the best. But the one really goofy copy is pretty damn good too.

By it''s self the Blob is a average horror film. But add in the skits, songs and trivia that Svengoolie adds and it becomes much better.

The Blob gets a B.

31 Days of Horror Day 07 2008 Gross ILE Halloween Horrorthon

Title-2008's Gross Ile Halloween Horrorthong Hosted by Deadpit Radio's Uncle Bill and the Creepy Kentuckian
Source-Deadpit.com DVD

Over the last 8 years I have mentioned Deadpit.com and the Deadpit Radio podcast a few times on this blog. Even reviewing some of their fan commentaries during my annual 31 Days of Horror. Late last year I was sent a big box of DVDs from a former fan of Deadpit. Most of the DVDs were various Deadpit fan commentaries synced up with the films they commentaries were made for. The other DVDs were either collections of the now defunct Deadpit on the Road Youtube series, the Into the Pit documentary and the dvd pictured above.

I didn't start listening to Deadpit Radio until sometime in 2010. I heard it mentioned on another horror podcast I listened to,the fun Dread Media. By the time I started listening to Deadpit Radio and visiting the site the above DVD was out of print. And I never heard anyone mentioning it.

Well my buddy CodyLL had bought a bunch of DVDs off the Deadpit guys at conventions. And after the hosts of Deadpit had managed to piss Cody off enough that he stopped listening to their show,he offered to send me all his Deadpit stuff. I can't remember if he mentioned this Horrorthon DVD or not when he told me he was sending me the package.

I got in the package and was flipping through all the DVDs. Trying to figure out to watch first. Then I saw this Horrorthon DVD.From what I saw on the cover I figured it was Uncle Bill and the Creepy Kentuckian hosting 2 horror films. The two films are Night of the Living Dead, the original from 1968,and Jerry Warren's Man Beast, which is from 1955.

Now of course I have seen NotLD many times, but had never even heard of Man Beast. So I threw the DVD into my player.Started it up. The first film they show is NotLD. With CK and Uncle Bill doing the horror host duties. Like telling us a bit about NotLD.Now both these guys claim to be horror experts. But really in their intro they mention nothing about NotLD that any horror fan wouldn't already know. So I ended up skipping through NotLD and figured I would watch Man Beast. Not knowing anything about Jerry Warren or Man Beast I enjoyed hearing what Creepy Kentuckian and Uncle Bill had to say about both subjects.

Connie is looking for her long lost brother. Who disappeared while searching for the yeti in the Himalayas. She leads a group to the area hoping to find her brother. She finds the last place her brother was seen and ends up running into a strange guide named Varga. They are quickly attacked by a giant monster and we find out that Varga has sinister plans for Connie.

Lots of the film looks like it is made up of stock footage. Which appears to be way older than the rest of the film. While the movie is only a bit over an hour it feels much much longer. Not sure if it is the print used, but the movie looks horrible. I know that lots of films that are in the public domain the easiest versions to find are from 16mm prints. And both Night of the Living Dead and Man Beast look like 16mm prints.

After about 15 minutes of watching Man Beast I was pretty bored. By the 20 minute mark myself and the other people watching the DVD with me had dug out our phones/tablets and were half watching the movie, half fucking off online.

This is a hard one to give a grade to. Cause Night of the Living Dead is a horror classic. One that if I meet someone that is over the age of 30 and claims to be a horror fan but doesn't like Night of the Living Dead I start to question if they are really a horror fan. But then Man Beast is just horrible.I get the feeling it was the third movie on lots of drive in theater's triple bills. For those of yall too young to have gotten to experience the drive in movie circuit in it's haydays,if the theater was having a double or triple feature they would usually put the best movie on first. With the second or third film being an older film that wasn't that great. The host segments are ok at best. Deadpit Radio had a sense of humor that is funny at first. Then after a bit you realize how limited their style of humor is. And quickly it goes from being funny to just being annoying. With Creepy Kentuckian being the biggest offender in the annoying department. He seems to take pride in how dumb and childish he is.

Earlier this year I did a quick video review/showcase of this DVD. And while doing it I read the back of the DVD case for the first time. Which is a long piece full of praise for Deadpit and it's two hosts. And hey you gotta promote yourself. But one of them, and I am betting it is Creepy Kentuckian, attributes the quote on the back to Lucio Fulci. Which is just stupid. First off by the time this was done Fulci had been dead for close to 2 decades. Secondly even if he was alive Fulci wouldn't be watching a mega hack like Creepy Kentuckian badly hosting 2 films.

31 Days of Horror Day 02 Count Gore De Vol's Creature Feature White Zombie

Yeah I know pretty much every horror fan over the age of 25 has seen or owns on some DVD multipack that well meaning aunt gave ya for X-mas the movie White Zombie. And yeah the print used is kind of shitty. It is watchable, and way way better than the horrible 5 buck VHS I bought at K&B Drugs when I was 12.

But it is October,it's a Monday and what better way to start the week than a horror classic starring Bela Lugosi. And it is hosted by one of the best of the modern Horror Hosts Count Gore De Vol. For years now on a regular schedule the Count has been releasing horror films new and old to Vimeo. So why is the Count one of the best of the modern Horror Hosts? Many many reasons, but one of them catapults him to the top.
The Count has a great set. And in the inside of his coffin  he has the infamous Vampirella Door poster. For years Warren sold that poster, and I always wanted one but there was no way my Catholic mother was gonna allow her son to have that poster. Here's a better view of the poster.
The episode opens with the Count letting us know this is an older episode that was shot in  SD. And he does a pretty good job explaining 4:3. So it is off to what I am guessing is the early to mid 2000s. Count Gore is pondering Christmas. And instead of playing Santa Claus conquors the Martians for the 100th time this holiday season Count Gore De Vol has a co host to show us White Zombie. And that co host is ZOMBIE CHEERLEADER!
Really either you love the Count's type of humor or you hate it. I love it. And with this episode the film is good enough that if you don't care for the Count it isn't hard to skip his parts and watch the movie.

Speaking of the movie it has been reviewed in every form  of media too many times. So besides pointing out a few personal highlights I am mostly gonna stick to reviewing the Count Gore parts.
Lugosi always brought a evil regal aura to his horror roles. Bela as Murder Legrendre for me is better than Bela as Dracula. Then there is his evil Voodoo powers. First he has his eye trick.
Sure to modern eyes it is a bit cheesy and low tech. But cause Bela has a presence that comes around once a generation he can take a cheesy effect and make it work almost 100 years later.
See. Just Bela holding  his hands in an odd way adds a weird feel to the  movie. It was the small things Mr Lugosi did that makes it worth  going back and watching some of the  Poverty Row movies he made after peaking with his staring role in Universal's Dracula.

About halfway thru the film  we go back to Zombie Cheerleader and Count Gore. She is trying to teach Gore a cheer.
It's a amusing spot. Then it is back the the film. Seriously if you have never seen White Zombie go watch it. It is public domain, which  is why every horror host shows it,and you can find a decent looking copy in a variety of video codecs at the Internet Archive. The film ends and  we get our final skit. That is another thing I like about the Count ,you get a few short skits but he never seems to  overstay his welcome.

Zombie Cheerleader has dressed Gore up as a cheerleader. The Count is horrible and the show is over.

White Zombie is a classic and while it being public domain means it is freely/cheaply available for everyone that also means there is piles of horrible prints floating around. One final kinda neat thing is if you use the Vimeo app you can download any video on  Vimeo for offline viewing. I have started stockpiling episodes of Count Gore to watch during long car rides.

White Zombie gets a B+ Count Gore De Vol and Zombie Cheerleader get a B.

31 Days of Horror 2016 Day 28 Svengoolie MeTV airing of SSSSSSSs

Title-Sssssss
Source-Svengoolie airing on MeTV

Since I have to wait on someone to upload the episodes I am way behind on Svengoolie. So when I got home earlier tonight I was looking for something to watch, and something that while I had seen it before it had been a long time. Saw the dvd-r of the Svengoolie's recent airing of this show and threw it into the blu ray player.

Dirk Benedict becomes the local snake expert's lad assistant. The Doctor starts shooting him up with chemicals, saying they are to help if he gets bit by a snake. Of course we know this will cause Dirk to transform into a snakeman.

Lots of real snakes in this.According to one of Sven's segments there is only one scene with a fake snake. The acting is pretty good. And over all it is a fun way to waste 2 hours. The only big fault with the film is the non-ending.

2016 Comic Challenge 157 Tales from the Crypt #02 Gladstone run

TITLE-Tales from the Crypt #02
PUBLISHER-Gladstone/The Bruce Hamilton Company

Somehow this short lived run of EC horror reprints from Gladstone escaped my attention. It wasn't until 2 years later and Russ Cochran took over the reprints that I really got into collecting these affordable reprints of some of the best horror comics to ever come out.

Under the great Jack Davis cover, there is eight stories. The lead story has the Crypt Keeper as our host, makes sense to me since Tales from the Crypt was CK's title. And this story has some beautiful Jack Davis.Plus is were the cover image comes from.

Up next is a Vault Keeper hosted story.Joe Orlando provides the art,and I have always loved all the horror stuff he has done. And since the first story focused on a werewolf, the Vault Keeper is bringing us a story about vampires.

CK is up again with "Busted Marriage"Jack Kamen does the art. He was known for his gorgeous women. EC did lots of bad marriage stories in their horror titles, and this isn't one of the better ones.

A mummy story, hosted by the Old Witch,is next.Ghastly Graham Ingels handles the artwork. With Ingels the gorier the better. So I was a bit disappointed he got a mummy story.Since those usually do not have huge amounts of gore.

Ahhh OK seems the second half of the issue is a reprint of an issue of Crime SuspenStories. The Russ Cochran reprints would do this. The cover is by Johnny Craig. And shows a man freezing to death in a meat locker. While a sinister butcher looks on. What I don't like is they removed the issue number off the cover.

"Out of the frying pan..." has Johnny Craig art. For some reason he uses his Jay Taycee pen-name.It is your typical EC crime story. This time I didn't guess the twist before it happened.

Jack Kamen appears again with "A Trace of Murder".This one is better than the previous story. And again we get some more of Kamen's gorgeous women. Something about Kamen's art reminds me of Matt Baker's art in the Golden Age.

"The Escaped Maniac" is a very forgettable story. EC would put out a dud some times. And when they did they were really bad. The art is credited to George Bell, who is a name I do not remember seeing associated with EC.

To end the issue we get a final story. This one with Ghastly Graham on the art chores. And it is a Haunt of Fear tale hosted by the Old Witch. And ends up being the best story from this reprint of Crime SuspenStories.

I really have no clue what a copy of all these late 80s thru mid 90s EC reprint comics would cost ya on Ebay or one of the many online comic shops. I just know I find them fairly often in comic shop/convention cheap bins. This issue I dug out of the dollar bins at a local comic shop. And for a buck or two you really can't go wrong with reprints of pretty much anything from EC.

31 Days of Horror Day 27 Horror Hosts

Last year for 31 days of Horror I reviewed a documentary about American horror hosts.

American Scary a documentary about Horror Hosts

The first horror host I saw was Sgt Graves. He was a zombie of a Confederate Army soldier. He was on the air for at least 5 years. Airing at 10:30pm Saturday nights. He would show two films. Most of the time I could manage to stay awake for the first film. But would have to record the second one. I can find no info on him on the internet. Even talking to people from the area that are my age, only one of them remembers Sgt Graves. If you are reading this and remember him please leave a comment at the bottom.

The next Horror host I saw,has to be the most famous of the modern era. Elvira,it was Halloween night. I got home around 9pm from trick or treating. While I was sitting on the floor going through all my candy,my father saw that on WPMI Channel 15 Night of the living dead was showing. I had never seen it. So he said I could stay up past my bedtime to watch it. I think I was 7 or maybe 8 at the time. We flipped the channel and I got to see Elvira for the first time. During this time she had her syndicated show Elvira's Movie Macabre. I do not think what I saw that night was part of movie macabre. But she was showing the colorized version of the original NotlD. And I sat on the floor, not moving, not talking, totally engrossed in the film. After the end of the film,Elvira came back on and said she was going to show the Vincent Price classic House on Haunted Hill next. My dad was nice enough to let me stay up to watch it also. So I got to stay up to 1am and watch another great horror film. After this I didn't see Elvira again until the "Elvira Mistress of the dark" movie came out.

Thankfully when she revived Movie Macabre my local CW network picked it up. At first it was airing at 10:30pm Saturday nights. But after a month or so she got moved to midnight. Then to 1am. Using my set top DVD recorder I recorded all but 2 of the episodes. The only thing that sucked about the new Movie Macabre was she only showed Public domain films. Since the original show, the tv rights to lots of the types of films she would show had gone sky high. Sadly after one season Movie Macabre was cancelled. Elvira is back on HULU now. She is showing mostly Full Moon Studio films. But they are free. Plus I hear she is showing NotLD again. I might have to watch that one again.

Right after Thanksgiving 1990 cable tv finally made it's way to the super rural community I lived in. Instead of offering HBO or Cinemax like every other cable company,Rural Cablevision only offered Showtime and TMC. Being the movie nut I am I offered to pay the monthly fee for both. The first weekend we had cable I was flipping channels and saw Job Bob Briggs for the first time. Joe Bob got his start reviewing the films he saw at various Texas drive ins in a newspaper. Then sometime in the 80s TMC offered him a weekly show. Each Saturday he would show a film. I made it a point every weekend to either watch the show or record it. The only of these recordings I still have is when every weeknight at 10pm on Showtime Joe Bob would show a different Emanuelle movie.

I guess not many people saw this show, because when I mention Joe Bob to most people they talk about his TNT show Monstervision. Which I never cared for. Mostly because since it aired on TNT all the films were edited for content. Earlier this year I got a dvd that is a Joe Bob's Drive in theater episode where he shows the Night of the Living Dead remake. And before and after the film he has most of the cast of the original on the show for a Q&A segment.

Once I got online in the mid 90s I started looking up stuff on horror hosts. By the early 2000s I had found a horror host website. But it had no info on Sgt Graves. And no one I talked to remembered there every being a horror host in MS. And until March of 2010 I thought MS had never had a horror host. I went to Coastcon. Saw in the programming guide that Saturday at 3pm they were screening Night of the Living Dead. I figured what the hell I will go watch it before going out to eat with some friends. I get there and find out it is an episode of what I think is the only horror host in MS history.

Margali hosted a show on a station out of Jackosn MS for a good number of years. The episode with NotlD never aired. She was already at Coastcon that year to help judge the costume contest. And for the first time ever her NotLD episode was shown. After the screening I got to meet and talk to Margali. She was really nice. And she told me she still had all her episodes. "Newt if you are willing to pay for postage I will make you copies of all my episodes." I gave her my email address and asked her to email me once she got the copies made. With my plan being to pay her postage and a bit more for them. I guess she forgot cause I never heard back from her. But at least now I know that Mississippi had it's own horror host. And it was fairly recent.

The horror host website Margali told me about had a huge section on Count Gore De Vol. He is based in the Washington DC area. And was the first horror host to go over to the internet. Almost every week he has up an new episode, Sometimes it is a movie, with most movies he divides them into 3 or 4 parts. Or it is a short film. But even when the films are total shit ,the Count's host segments are entertaining.

Count Gore De Vol's website

Back in March one of the torrent sites I visit got a new uploader. He was uploading episodes of Svengoulie off MeTV. Sven has been around for since 1979. And is the second actor to play Sven. He seems to have a deal to show lots of Universal horror films. Since March I have gotten ahold of over 20 episodes of his show from the MeTV airings. Each episode besides giving us some back history on the film,he reads the mail. Then in the final segment answers the door of his crypt. Tells some bad jokes and each show ends with him going to his casket as people off the screen throw rubber chickens at him. Just the other night I watched Sven's airing of Abbot and Costello meet Jekyl and Hyde. Then 2 days ago I watched Murders in the Rue Morgue episode.

I hope everyone enjoyed me blathering on about Horror hosts.
