TITLE-Astro City Volume 01 #04
PUBLISHER-Image
Another story showing us the normal average citizen of Astro City's POV of living in a place packed with super powered beings.
Our lead is a younger lady. Who lives in what is the supernatural part of Astro City. But works in the dead center of town. She wants to move out of Shadow Hill and not have to worry every night about attacks. Gets offered a chance to split an apartment with some people at work. Then a team of super villains attacks her workplace. Even after being quickly saved by Astro City's version of the Fantastic Four, our lead changes her mind and now wants to keep living in her old neighborhood.
While not as good as the previous two issues, this is still a good comic. It felt more like Busick trying to introduce as many parts and people of Astro City as he could in one issue. Which ended up being done pretty decently.

2017 Comic Challenge 297 Astro City volume 01 #03
TITLE-Astro City Volume 01 #03
PUBLISHER-Image
Yep back to Busick's Astro City. I have no clue as of the quality of this series after the Tarnished Angel story in Vol 02,but at least up till then it is an amazing series that more people should read.
In this issue a low level crook,he robs stores to live, manages to not only escape Jack in the Box but also sees Jack unmasking. And so now this nobody in the criminal world knows the secret identity of Astro City's version of say Spidey,Blue Beetle or The Creeper.Information like this is valuable but also dangerous. So what will he do with this info?
So Busick takes another old comic book cliche/trope and tries to add some realism to it.While stuff like Watchmen,Miracleman,DKR and Squadron Supreme get referred to as grim and gritty deconstructions of the superhero genre,Astro City is a more optimistic and realistic deconstruction of the superhero genre.
Honestly folks Astro City is one of those series that was popular as fuck when it was coming out in the late 90s,but to me it feels like people have forgotten about it. Go grab some back issues or a trade and check it out. If you like superheroes odds are good you will enjoy this series.

2017 Comic Challenge 296 Astro City vol 01 #02
TITLE-Astro City volume 01 #02
PUBLISHER-Image
Been 20 years since I read the first volume of Astro City. But recently found a bunch of them cheap in the local comic shop cheap bins.
A reporter in Astro City learns how hard it is to be a journalist in a city full of super powered beings. After witnessing a gigantic battle, were the fate of reality is in jeopardy,he writes about it. But quickly learns that he isn't working for a J. Jonah Jameson style rag.
The art is great. I love how with just a few panels and well written pieces of dialogue I feel like I have known the various heroes appearing in this issue for years.

2016 Comic Challenge 079 Squadron Supreme #01
TITLE-Squadron Supreme #01
PUBLISHER-Marvel
I almost didn't bother getting this comic. Pretty much every story I have read with the Squadron Supreme since Grunwald died has been shit.
So it was a nice surprise to see a well written story with them. Now I didn't read all of Secret Wars, mostly cause I found it very boring. But I heard enough to understand some of the changes Marvel has done to their main universe.
So we got a team of various people from various realities. With the Marvel MAX version of Nighthawk,Blur from DP7 and they even got Princess Power from the Grunwald run.
Seems Namor destroyed the world this teams Dr Spectrum lived in. So now the entire team is out to get him. And they do a damn good job. First they distract Namor so Hyperion can raise Atlantis above the ocean floor. Then Hyperion ends up decapitating Namor.
I am assuming this will be the more pro-active team in this new Marvel Universe. And I love that they got Blur here. Plus bringing back the original Princess Power.

2015 Reading Challenge Book 074 Project Superpowers Chapter 2 volume 1
TITLE-Project Superpowers Chapter 2 volume 1
AUTHOR-Alex Ross & Jim Krueger
FORMAT-Trade Paperback
FIRST TIME READING-No
PRICE-$3
This series picks up pretty much where Chapter 1 ended. The heroes have taken over DC and NYC. But we see that all the sidekicks are now back. Hiding in some Eastern European country. And are of the mind that the returned heroes have been brainwashed.
So we got that plotline going on. Plus Captain Future has returned. Going around killing people. But it isn't until he shows up and majorly injured Samson that the heroes realize there is something majorly changed about their old friend Captain Future.
Once again the art is good. The writing is well done. And I love how many new heroes are crammed into these 7 issues.
Project Superpowers Chapter 2 volume 1 gets a 3.62 outta 5.

2015 Reading Challenge Book 067 Project Superpowers volume 01
TITLE-Project Superpowers volume 1
AUTHOR-Alex Ross and Jim Krueger
FORMAT-Trade Paperback
FIRST TIME READING-No
PRICE-$7.50
I remember first hearing about this mini series in early 2008. I have always liked the Golden Age public domain heroes. With Malibu's Protectors being one of my favorite series. So when I found out Alex Ross was doing a mini series at Dynamite that was reviving lots of PD Golden Age heroes I had to read it.
I managed to grab issues 0 thru 7 out of the cheap bins at the comic shop on the coast I was going to a few times a year. The owner and I ended up chatting about the Black Terror and the Golden Age Daredevil for a long time that day.
Then a few years later the Science Fiction Book Club was having a big sale. I went to see what they had on clearance and they had the trade reprinting the first mini series for cheap. I gave away my copies of the issues. Cause everything in them is reprinted in this trade.
So what is the story? Starting in WWII the Fighting Yank is going around and trapping the various heroes into Pandora's box, which is a urn actually. By doing this he is told it will cause all the evil in the world to also return to the box.
Then in modern day he realizes he was duped. So with help from the Green Lama,he breaks the urn and all the heroes return. But cause of their time in the urn they have changed.
The main thrust of the story is these now free heroes dealing with not only being betrayed by one of their own,but dealing with how different the world is now.And by the end of the mini series they have taken control of New York City.
I ended up re-reading this because finally after a few years of nothing Dynamite has a new Project Superpowers series on the stands. Written by Warren Ellis, and up to it's 3rd issue. I wanted to refresh my memory on this series before starting the new stuff.
Project Superpowers volume 1 gets a 3.99 outta 5.

2015 Reading Challenge Book 059 Astro City Tarnished Angel
TITLE-Astro City The Tarnished Angel
AUTHOR-Kurt Busiek
FORMAT-Hardcover
FIRST TIME READING-No
PRICE-Free
I didn't start reading Astro City until around issue 8 of the second volume. And I read it until there was very very long delays between issues. With the Tarnished Angel storyline being the last one I read. Then back in 2008 I had managed to Stump the Rios on the Comic Geek Speak podcast 2 times. So I got an email from Peter Rios asking me what I would like as my 2 prizes. I wanted a CGS shirt and then asked him what trades/hardcovers they had as prizes. Saw they had this one and asked for it. About a month later I got it.
Originally published as issues 14 thru 20 of volume 2 of Astro City. This is the story of Steeljack. A super villain that has skin made of some kind of weird metal. Which means he can not be harmed easily. Plus he has super human strength. At the beginning of the story he is getting out of jail after spending right at 10 years for some crime.
Steeljack wants to got straight. He moved back to the slums of Astro City. But finds out no one wants to hire a super powered ex-con. And his parole officer basically tells him to just leave the country.
Then the families of various super villains he worked with in the past make him a deal. It seems someone is killing off the low level super villains. And because of who they are the cops aren't really bothering to look into this. So their families hire Steeljack out to find out who is behind these killings.
Over the course of the 7 issues we get to learn so much about the various villains of this comic universe.Steeljack really really wants to put his criminal habits into his past. And the main thing in his past he wants to correct is that his mother never got a tombstone.
Steeljack figures out who is behind the killings. And tries to get some of the various heroes that populate Astro City to help. But because of his past they ignore him. So it is up to him to save the lives of a huge group of low level criminals.
The story is so well written. The mystery of who the big bad villain is can be solved with just the clues the reader is given. But it isn't so easy to figure out that you guess it as soon as you meet the person.
The artwork is amazing. The covers are all done by Alex Ross. With Brent Anderson doing the interior art. I love how Ross and Anderson make Steeljack look like Robert Mitchem. And the image on the cover was created just for this hardcover.
After the issues we get 14 pages of character sketches from Alex Ross. It is always neat to see how the character's look evolve between their creation and when they first appear. Then there is 14 pages devoted to sketches and pictures showing how Ross did the covers.
Plus you got the neat extras for this hardcover. Like the dust jacket. That seems to be made out of heavier paper than most dust jackets are. And I really like the built in ribbon bookmark.
Astro City Tarnished Angel gets a 4.11 outta 5.
