Juni Ba's Monkey Meat Issue 3

TITLE-Juni Ba's Monkey Meat #3

PUBLISHER-Image

Not that long ago I got 200 random indie comix. So one evening while dinner was cooking, I will make a pizza once a week for dinner, I sat down and just grabbed a handful of these random comix and started reading them.

This issue starts off with what appears to be two bums sitting up against a wall. Telling stories of the past. About a delivery boy. With a very important package. Seems this boy was stolen as a baby by the Fae. Then once he was a teen released back into the real world. He became the best delivery person in the world.

So he was tasked with delivering a very very important package. Just one thing

A TROLL UNDER A BRIDGE!!!!

Yep this tall tale told by drunken bums is a retelling of a classic fairy tale.

The Troll is strong and tough. The Delivery Boy has a secret weapon. A potion that allows him to keep on living after dying. A potion that caused a zombie outbreak. Still this package must be delivered.

Then the ending> SPOILERS<

The package was another young child that was stolen by the Fae and out Delivery Boy brings her home to her parents.

And this tall tale telling ends with the parents and that child visiting the bums and giving them beer.

This was wild. Feels like there is a very hidden story under all this. One I would catch more of if I had read the first 2 issues.

Stormwatch Post Human Division Volume 3

Ahh Stormwatch the little Wildstorm comic that kept going for so long.

Been a Stormwatch fan for a bit now. Read the Ellis run. Read all of the DC NEW 52 run. So all I had left was Stormwatch Team Achilies and Stormwatch Post Human Division.

Months back I read the first 3 issues of the PHD run and enjoyed them. Then found the above pictured trade cheap. This trade collects issues 13 thru 19 of PHD.

The world has been almost destroyed by supers. Stormwatch is back in the sky,Jackson is back running it and trying to save as many people as he can. While using what is left of Stormwatch to protect what is left of mankind.

This feels a lot like the run Warren Ellis had. Big huge threats that last at most 2 issues. Little hints early on for what will happen issues down the road. And  a few nice callbacks to previously mentioned minor things.

Nice art that is easy to digest while helping push forward the story. Not an overbundance of 2 page splashes.

And now I want to go get the rest  of the TPBs covering this era of the Wildstorm universe.

Stormwatch PHD vol 3 gets a A-.

Wetworks Volume 2 TPB 2

Ahh Wetworks. The Whilce Portacio series from Image. That cause of various events came out 2 years into Image's run instead of that first year. Also one where I had a huge chunk of hte first vol. But besides the sourcebook I have never read any of the issues.

Wasn't that long ago I was at the nearest Ollies. Saw this trade and it was cheap and took a chance. Cause the basic premise of Wetworks is a good one.

Military unit gets connected to this golden liquid metal. Which will cover them and they have to fight werewolves and vampires.

The TPB pictured above reprints issues 6,7,8,9,13,14,15 of vol 2. Yes it skips a pile of issues. No idea why. But it contains two full storylines.

Up first is The Scapegoat Effect. First issue penciled by Wetworks creator Whilce Portacio. Wish he had done more than one issue in the tpb. The leader of Wetworks,Dane,is rebuilding the team. And also we got a civil war in the vampire nation. All of which ends with a portal to another world being opened and more powerful vampires flooding Earth.

Then the second storyline,Unholy War,brings to a head the civil war. Seems various factions in the Vampire Nation are trying to take over.

After wiping out a small Europeon city and heading to a bigger one Mother One,the former member of Wetworks, gets changed into a cyborg/vampire/something else. Saves everyone. And all it costs the world is one nation of the world gets turned over to the Vampire Nation.

The art is good but having 6 different  artists across not many more issues than 6 isn't great. There is times where from one page to another the look totally changes. Yea I get it I am going from the end of one issue to another. Still it is jarring.

Writing it damn good. Reads a bit like a slightly more serious version of Larry Hama's run on GI Joe with a supernatural element added.

Wetworks Vol 2 TPB 2 gets  C.

Supreme Blue Rose

TITLE-Supreme Blue Rose

PUBLISHER-Image

Supreme is an oddity when it comes to 90s boom creations. Sure he got 40+ issues before Alan Moore took over and revamped the title into a critical success. I read maybe the first 3 issues of that run. Skipped the Moore run. Then  finally in 2009 or 2010 thanks to Inter Library Loan I got the two TPBs from Checker Books that reprinted all of Moore's Supreme run.

I was surprised at how good it was. Having read most of Moore's previous work at Image, and only really enjoying 1963,Supreme was a love letter to Silver Age Superman. And  much better one that the IMO Highly over rated All Star Superman.

Thanks to no one wanting them and their reputation of being total crap, plus the early stuff having huge print runs, over the course of about 5 years I managed to get a full run of the pre Moore Supreme.

It was not long after finishing that run that I saw the solicits for the Supreme Blue Rose mini series. My plan at the tiime was to just get scans of each issue. Then  grab the TPB once that was out. Got the scans read and loved it. Then  forgot to grab the TPB until sometime in summer of 2023.

Written by Warren  Ellis and with amazing art from Tula Lotay. And that art. Pastels and this chalk or crayon like texture to most of the colors. The art fits the odd nature of the story.

An out of work reporter is hired to find out about a plane crash in Littlehaven. Hired by a man with the same name as Supreme's lead villain,a Lex Luthor like mad scientist.

Using the Supremacy idea that Alan Moore created(The Supremacy is a pocket dimension where all the previous versions of Supreme live.) Warren Ellis creates a story that reads like David Lynch and Jordorosky teamed up. And Vince Mcmahon/Hulk Hogan No Holds Barred style spent a weekend in a  hotel with a typewriter and possibly some chemical help and created this insane story.

A story that not only keeps all the previous Supreme stuff in cannon but adds to the concepts Alan Moore came up with in the other Extreme/Awesome comics he wrote.

Being only 7 issues, and having not read it since it was coming out monthly,I had forgotten how unlike most modern comics this isn't a fast read. Even with more than a few pages that are either double page splashes, that look amazing. Or sometimes 3 or 4 pages of no dialogue, just gorgeous art that tells the story.

From what I can see as of writing this is the newest Supreme stuff. One good thing about how Warren Ellis wraps up this mini is the next creative team can take what happens here and build on it. Or just ignore it and either way works.

Now I am not sure how well this reads to anyone that at least doesnt know the basics about Alan Moore's Supreme run. This re-read,which I did in  a doctor's waiting room one cold rainy day,I noticed how much stuff from the pre Moore run is referenced.

Looked and unless you just gotta have the issues it is much much cheaper and easier to order this as a TPB.

Supreme Blue Rose gets a B+.

Manifest Destiny Volume 1 Flora and Fauna TPB

Manifest Destiny VOL 1 Flora & Fauna

Image Comics

Off and on for the past 5 years I have had people talk about how Manifest Desting from Image was a neat twist on a historical adventure comic.

Last year I was at the  nearest Books a Million and  found vol 1 on their used shelf. I think I paid 5 bucks, cover price is 10 bucks. Then it got put into the TPB/Hardcover/OGN read pile.

And got forgotten about until today. Sure it is summer but there was enough breeze to make it bareably to sit out  on the pier. I brought a huge stack of comics with me and Manifest Destiny Vol 1 caught my eye. So put on some music and 30 minutes later I was looking to  see if the rest of the series is out in  tpbs and how much it is gonna cost me. Cause damn folks this is good.

Written by Chris DIngess with Matthew Roberts handling  pencils and  inks Manifest Destiny started at Image in 2014. In the series you are following  Lewis&Clark as they explode the mid west/western part of the  USA.

With in the first 3 pages we get hints that something isn't right. Cause while this comic is based on  actual history, they add a nice twist.

They dock their boat and head to a nearby fort. Which is the furthest west settlement in the US. Here is where Lewis and Clark are suppose to meet Sacagawea.

On the land they get attacked by a creature that is part horse, part man and part buffalo. Yea not a minotaur not a centuar but some weird hybrid.

When they make it to the fort it appears to be abandoned. Until a few of the guys, while looking for supplies, discover that some of the  fort denizens are still around but now look like  Swamp Thing.

So now our group adventurers are stuck in the  fort, cause a pile of the Buffalo-taurs have surrounded it. And got a pile of these planet people in the  fort after them. Shooting the plant people does nothing. Cutting them up just makes the parts cut off come alive and attack. They figure out that fire works. And this is when a few of the survivors from the  Fort appear.

The survivors explain how some kind of infection hit and turns you inside and out into a plant based life form. Who all share one mind.

The group is worried about how they will survive, cause while they  can handle the plant people in the fort. They doubt thhey can get around the Buffalo-taurs. And have a very limited amount of food left.

Our leads come up with a decent plan. Having 5 people sneak out and lead the buffalo-taurs one way while the rest run  for the ships.

They are about to execute the  plan when  Sacagawea shows up. She has killed all the Buffalo-taurs. And wow there is a great scene showing her killing them  looks like  something out of a John Woo Hong Kong  action movie.

After making  it back to the  boats. And digging out some greek fire from the ships storage, they  plan on going and burning all the plant people. To try to prevent this infection from  spreading. It  kind of reminds me of kudzu.

Anyone that gets the  plant people liquid on them  will turn into one and it works the same on animals. So  you  get a scene with a plant possessed deer.

And a great scene where one of the  good guys meets a plant possessed skunk

Lewis and  Clark get captured by the big plant that is the  hive mind of the plant people. And it's plan is like the killer plant from that one Superman annual that Alan Moore wrote. IE give the victims their heart's desires while the plant feeds off their bodies.

Native American  Ninja Sacagawea comes and saves our leads. And this trade  ends with her joining the group as they plan  on  leaving the next morning to finish their expadittion.

Really Really hoping this series is either over or near ending. Cause I plan on ordering all the tpbs at once and spending say 4 days just reading this series.

Never heard of the writer or the artist on the series. But the writer has a good way with dialogue. And the artist makes all the scenes full of 100 shades of green be super interesting to stare at.

TITLE-The Walking Dead 164
PUBLISHER-Image

Fun issue. Got a bunch of people from Hilltop and Alexandria on horse back leading off packs of zombies from the herd that is inside Alexandria.

And while all that is great, well written and drawn the best part of the issue is Rick and Negan get stuck together inside a tiny shed inside Alexadria. And Negan explains why he is the  way he is to Rick. Kind of surprised but it makes sense.

It looks like our leads have this under control and Alexandria will survive. Then the last page reveals that some of the Saviours are lying in wait. Ready to attack as soon as the herd is gone.

2017 Comic Challenge 307 The Walking Dead #163

TITLE-The Walking Dead #163
PUBLISHER-Image
FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know Alexandria was prepared for a zombie herd attack, but no way were they prepared for a herd this large.

Andrea,Eugene,Jesus,Michonne and others are out on horses. To try to lead off large amounts of the herd away from the town. Back at the community Rick has everyone ready with knives to stab all the zombies pressing up against the front gate. But there is so many zombies the ones on the gate start to get crushed and become liquefied.
While our leads might have survived the war with the Whisperers fairly well it doesn’t look like they have a chance of surviving this herd. I am guessing that before issue 175 what is left of our leads will be back living on the run.

2017 Comic Challenge 306 Southern Bastards #16

TITLE-Southern Bastards #16
PUBLISHER-Image

Fuck yeah the two Jasons are back with another issue of Southern Bastards.

With the Rebs losing their past 2 games Coach Boss is gonna make sure they don't lose a third in the row. So him and 2 of his guys head to the home of the star player of a rival team.

It looks like Coach Boss is gonna injury the kid bad enough so he has to miss a game. But the kid stands up and explains how it was Coach Boss that inspired him to be the best he can be on the field.

And of course during all this Coach's goons are holding the kid's parents at gun point. The parents turn the tables and it gets nasty. Both of the parents get shot/beaten so bad they end up in intensive care.

It looks like the Rebs got the game won. When the star player kid actually shows up. The game ends a tie, which we find out from a radio that a few of Coach Boss's goons are listening too. Out of nowhere two guys armed with fully automatic weapons shoot and kill the goons.

As it has so far with each issue Southern Bastards ends leaving you hoping that in 4 weeks you will get another issue.

2017 Comic Challenge 305 The Walking Dead #162

TITLE-The Walking Dead #162
PUBLISHER-Image

The battle is over. Some troops reach Hilltop and see what is left. Dwight's group makes it back to Alexandria. Carl has a sweet moment with Lydia. All looks good. The war is over. Our leads have once again won. Sure they suffered losses of people and Hilltop is almost totally gone.Plus Eugene has worked himself to death to manufacture and deliver to Alexandria a huge wagon packed to the rafters with ammunition. So it looks good. Maybe a time of peace for our survivors.Time to mourn the dead and keep on surviving.

Then in the last 5 pages shit hits the fan. Dwight is explaining to Rick how his army managed to stop the Whisperers and their herd of around 1000 zombies. And we find out that Beta and what is left of the Whisperers have lead what looks to be millions of zombies towards Alexandria.

There is so many beautiful 2 page spreads in this issue. The first being when the troops on horseback finally make it to Hilltop. The other two are near the end. It is just millions and millions of zombies being lead towards Alexandria.

Just guessing but I am gonna say before the end of this year our leads will be back on the road again. But who knows with this title.

There is a reason I get Walking Dead every month. A reason why I end up buying every issue twice, digital for monthly issues and then whenever the next Compendium comes out.And it is cause even after 162 issues it still finds a way to keep surprising me and keeping my interest.

2017 Comic Challenge 301 Astro City Vol 01 #04

TITLE-Astro City Volume 01 #04
PUBLISHER-Image

Another story showing us the normal average citizen of Astro City's POV of living in a place packed with super powered beings.

Our lead is a younger lady. Who lives in what is the supernatural part of Astro City. But works in the dead center of town. She wants to move out of Shadow Hill and not have to worry every night about attacks. Gets offered a chance to split an apartment with some people at work. Then a team of super villains attacks her workplace. Even after being quickly saved by Astro City's version of the Fantastic Four, our lead changes her mind and now wants to keep living in her old neighborhood.

While not as good as the previous two issues, this is still a good comic. It felt more like Busick trying to introduce as many parts and people of Astro City as he could in one issue. Which ended up being done pretty decently.

2017 Comic Challenge 300 A Touch of Silver #01

TITLE-A Touch of Silver #01
PUBLISHER-Image

After hearing about this series for years, plus reading what I think is all of Jim Valentino's Normalman series last year,I have been wanting to try out A Touch of Silver. Going into the comic all I knew was it was semi autobiographical, and that Gary Groth of  The Comics Journal hated it.

Ok I see why Groth hated it. This is Valentino trying his best to pull on every fanboy's heartstrings. Imagine if you took Blankets, another comic I hate, and add the art style of early issues of Hate. You would get A Touch of Silver. It is every "Man it sucked growing up as a comic geek. Everyone hated me" story you have heard or lived through at once.

So sorry Mr Valentino,I have at least enjoyed every other thing of yours I have read. But A Touch of Silver is pure crap.

A Touch of Silver gets a pass. Pass it to a trash can and light it on fire so no one else should have to suffer through this god awful comic.

2017 Comic Challenge 296 Astro City vol 01 #02

TITLE-Astro City volume 01 #02
PUBLISHER-Image

Been 20 years since I read the first volume of Astro City. But recently found a bunch of them cheap in the local comic shop cheap bins.

A reporter in Astro City learns how hard it is to be a journalist in a city full of super powered beings. After witnessing a gigantic battle, were the fate of reality is in jeopardy,he writes about it. But quickly learns that he isn't working for a J. Jonah Jameson style rag.

The art is great. I love how with just a few panels and well written pieces of dialogue I feel like I have known the various heroes appearing in this issue for years.

2016 Comic Challenge 295 Alley Cat #03

TITLE-Alley Cat #03
PUBLISHER-Image

In every comic collectors collection there is always a stack of comics that they have no idea the when, where or why of how the comics got into the collection. The above issue of Alley Cat belongs to that group.

I kind of remember seeing a few copies of this on the comic shop wall when it was coming out. But at least to me summer of 99 was kind of late for a "bad girl" comic. But I guess at the time either Alley Baggett,a former Playboy Playmate, was enough of a name to get her own comic or it is possible Ms Baggett paid to produce the comic herself. The cover seems to be signed by a DesRian C. Never heard of them, and the inside front cover credits only give cover credits for the what I assume variant Photo Covers.

Speaking of the inside front cover, holy hell do a lot of people get credit for what is  just 22 pages of average kind of Crow/Faust inspired work.
Created by Alley Baggett,Matt Hawkins & Greg Aronowitz
Written by Bob Napton & Matt Hawkins
Based on a Story by Alley Baggett,Matt Hawkins,Greg Aronowitz & Bob Napton

Wait nooo.... they just credited 4 people, all of them at least 2 times, for creating and writing this story???? These four are proud as fuck of this comic.

Set in what was then modern day NOLA,we start off with Alley and a priest roaming the streets. He is known as The Exorcist. No I ain't fucking with you,

All over the city, but only seen by Alley and The Exorcist are demons. Some as you see above just flying around. Others have possessed people all over the city.Seems Alley's outfit has powers and/or a history thanks to the Marque DeSade. It isn't really explained and Alley runs off to save someone named Mark.

Back at Alley's home a group of long coated detectives are trying to puzzle out what has recently happened at this apparent suburban New Orleans home. Thankfully before this scene can morph into Law and Order Cajun Victims Unit, now airing for 28 hours a day on 5 different Universal owned TV stations,it ends.

Time for more of Alley and The Exorcist wandering the city. Then a short time later they are in a graveyard. Encounter the previously mentioned Mark.He asks for help. Alley is willing to give it,but The Exorcist tries to kill him with a cross dagger. I wonder if he got these from the set of The Omen II? Alley subdues The Exorcist. And we find out that the demon inside of Mark doesn't want help.He summons a group of demons who manage to knock Alley Cat out.

When she wakes up,she finds herself in an old abandoned house or building. It isn't really made clear what it is. She wanders and finds Mark's killing room. He has The Exorcist tied up to a chair, and unconscious. And some lady suspended from the ceiling. At the bottom of the page we discover that to add even more sleazy to the comic  this entire room is being recorded.

But before we can find out how Alley Cat can stop all of this, and since it is a 90s comic, time for the double page centerfold poster.
Mark is about to whip the hanging woman and asks Alley to join him. When she snaps and beats him to death. In a fairly violent scene for a comic book that so far has been PG-13ish.
Now it starts to make some sense. Alley's outfit was maybe empowered by the spirit of the Marque DeSade. But I know for sure that DeSade's spirit was possessing Mark. Which is why he had the torture room set up.Thanks to him video recording everything that happened in that room,Alley will more than likely get away with brutally murdering an unarmed man. Because as the story ends,we go back to the Cajun Victims Unit detectives. Here we learn that Alley was under the influence of a powerful hallucinogen. Seems her husband had been drugging her with pills so he could get her to agree to allow Mark to torture her. Plus we find out that The Exorcist has vanished without a trace.

So was he ever really there? Was there really demons and spirits all over the city? Or was Alley just all wacked out on some strong as hell hallucinogens? The final panel hints that all the supernatural stuff was legit.

Then we get a page of text that explains that the original plan for Alley Cat was a 3 issue mini series. But sales are so high it has been promoted to a ongoing series.Well good for them for having the smarts to write the story so if they only got 3 issues it didn't leave any big plots hanging. But also leaving it open enough that it wouldn't be hard at all to make this a continuing series.Following this halfway decent text piece is a few pages of ads for all kinds of Alley Cat comics. Mostly variant covers and special con editions. With the inside front cover being a black page with white text of Alley Baggett's website URL.Just checked and the site is still up. Seems since the big comic book bucks stopped rolling in the site has transformed into what appears to be a softcore porn site.

Now when I first opened the book, well after checking out the credits,I noticed that in the indicia Alley Cat is copyright and trademark of not only Alley Baggett but also Action Toys. The name Action Toys kind of rang a bell. After seeing the back cover I remembered why the name rang a bell.
Back when the figures shipped, the comic shop I went to every week got sent a case of them. They never ordered them. Never got charged for them. And because no one wanted the figures, even when reduced down to $5 each the case got stored in the back.

Around 2005 the owner sold the store to a group of 5 regular customers.2 of whom would run the place and work there full time. The other 3 would help out and get a good discount on their weekly comics. While going thru the back they found the case of figures from Action Toys and since they knew I collected comic book based action figures gave me first shot at them. But even at a hugely discounted price it wasn't worth buying them.

While the story was nothing original or really that intriguing the art was pretty decent. Now I gotta find someone who would want this comic, cause there is no way I can donate it to the children's wing of the local hospital.

Alley Cat #03 gets a borrow.

2016 Comic Challenge 286 Fantastic Comics #24

TITLE-Fantastic Comics #24
PUBLISHER-Image

Back in 2008 Image started up the Next Issue Project. Where they took public domain Golden Age comics and put out the next issue. And to make them even more Golden Age-ish they published them at the bigger Golden Age size.

In this issue we get 9 stories. With the stand outs being the cover feature Samson. Which is drawn and written by Erik Larsen. Now I haven't read much of the old Golden Age Samson stuff. But this story does feel of the era. Plus Larsen's art has a very Kirby feel to it.

The other major stand out is the Mike Allred drawn and Joe Keating written Stardust the super wizard. Before reading this new story of Stardust I had never even heard of him.And now he is one of my favorite forgotten Golden Age heroes. This story has a very Neil Gaiman era Miracleman feel.

For me really the only bad thing to this comic is the bigger size makes it harder to store.I usually end up tossing it into one of my magazine boxes.

Back at Rick's community we see him and Andrea talking about what needs to be done to end this war.And outside the  community a bit we got Eugune making as many bullets as he can.

The issue ends with us finding out someone is plotting to take out Rick.

2016 Comic Challenge 283 The Pitt Vol 01 #01

TITLE-Pitt Volume 01 #01
PUBLISHER-Image

Wanted to look at some Dale Keown art. Not a fan of the writer during Keown's run on Hulk. Also all of Dale's Aircel work has that Barry Blair taint on it. So I was stuck with Pitt.

I had read a few issues of Pitt in the mid 90s. Felt like a Hulk/Alien warrior merging. But with pretty art.

So for the first time I read the first issue of the first volume of Pitt. Pitt fights a bike gang, fight lasts too many pages but has great art. Then we see a little kid that is somehow connected to Pitt. Followed by what I think is a flashback for Pitt. At the end some cops we just got introduced to meet up with something in the subway.

Gonna give this at least 2 more issues to see if it improves. But as of right now looks like Pitt is a book you buy to look at the art and skip reading it.

2016 Comic Challenge 274 Southern Bastards #15

TITLE-Southern Bastards #15
PUBLISHER-Image

Picking up after the end of the last story, the Running Rebs are trying to deal with their devastating loss last issue.

One of the coach's guys offers to take a few of the players over to an opposing teams home, beat the fuck out of him and make it look like a robbery. Coach turns this down, proving my point that in small southern towns High School Football on Friday night is the true Sabbath.

The Rebs think they are ready for their next game. Then get their asses handed to them again. So Coach makes a call and seems the "robbery" plan is in motion.

On the other side we keep seeing Roberta in the background all over the issue. At the end when Coach grabs Roberta's father's old stick it looks like next issue will start with a fight.

The delay this time thankfully wasn't that long. Art and story are as great as they have always been.

2016 Comic Challenge 270 The Walking Dead #160

TITLE-The Walking Dead #160
PUBLISHER-Image

We are over halfway thru with the Whisperer War story. Our heroes front line has split up. Disguised as Whisperers hidden into the oncoming herd.

Back at Maggie's kingdom it looks good. Then flaming arrows start raining in over the walls. And a herd of zombies is at the gates.

The art and story keep me coming back every month. One of the few titles I just can't wait on the trade for.

2016 Comic Challenge 245 The Walking Dead #158

TITLE-The Walking Dead #158

Part 2 of the Whisperers war is out.Gabriel is on lookout when he falls, loses his rifle and breaks his ankle. So he is left hanging there as a herd of walkers and Whisperers go by. One of the more gruesome deaths in this comic in a long ass time.

Out on the frontlines Dwight has a line of troops ready. Negan is with them but unarmed. Then the herd gets to them. Thanks to some flanking manuevers and Negan's quick thinking most of them manage to escape.

But it looks like this war has just begun. Like pretty much every month Kirkman and Adlard have me gladly forking over right at 4 bucks for my fix.
