Surprise spring 2016 VHS finds

The last few times I have hit the few places I know of that haven't taken to pricing VHS at "$5 a tape cause they are collectors items now."the places had nothing. One of them had stacks of hunting and fishing videos.

Then this past Friday I had time to kill so hit one of the local thrift stores. They must have just gotten in a bunch of VHS and DVD,cause the normally half full shelves were packed thru. There was also a new shelf full and a big tub full.

I start digging thru the big shelves, found no DVDs I wanted but did find 2 VHS.
Never seen this Don "the Dragon" Wilson film.It is a ex-video store copy. And the main label has fallen off. But as with all of these tapes once I got home I pt each one into my vcr and tested them out.And they all work and look decent.
Yep it is still sealed. Saw this film years ago and enjoyed it. But debating on if I am gonna open it and watch it or leave it sealed.

Wandered over to the new shelf of VHS,which thankfully had a chair next to it. I sit down and start going thru piles of oversized kids VHS.
I have never seen this video compilation. But with the tapes being extremely cheap I took the chance. Plus it is Cheech and Chong, they are pretty much guaranteed to be funny.
Somehow over the years I have never owned Misery. And until I find it cheap on DVD or Blu Ray this VHS will work fine.

That was the only finds on the new shelf. So time to dig into the tub. Oh forgot there was a bunch of non pre-record VHS mixed into every shelf so far. And I would quickly glance at the label just to see what might be on there. Did find one labeled "Coonie's Wedding". Might go back and grab that another day.

But back to the tub of tapes.
Since getting this on DVD in it's original cut is almost impossible I have been on the lookout for a VHS of it. Not only is it my favorite of the 5 Prom Night films. It is also the first one of that franchise I have seen.
Yep a New Line release of Return of the Street Fighter. I discovered the Sonny Chiba films thanks to a buddy back in the mid 90s. But have never gotten a copy of this film from the great Streetfighter series.
Never heard of this film. But it is Science Fiction and it is from Cannon,so it will be at least watchable.

No clue if it can be read but on the case it says "Wrestling don't record over." and then "Dont Record OVER!" Sadly it isn't wrestling it is 4 hours of rodeo.
I got Full Moon Fever mixed up with Full Moon High.I bought this thinking I was gonna get a chance to watch a horror/comedy I have been wanting to see for years. Turns out Full Moon Fever is some late 80s porn.

Now that is all I found at the local store. And if that was all I found it would be a good haul. But then last Saturday I rode down to Richton MS. SWA was having a wrestling show and I had been asked to come help out a local video crew.

After getting there and setting up,I see that there was a lady with a table full of DVDs and other stuff. On the table was 2 vhs. I see a Ric Flair WCW VHS and picked it up.Was about to ask the woman how much when she looks over and says "Monty has a pile of vcr tapes in this tub. Feel free to dig into it. He is selling them cheap."

Managed to score 8 WCW VHS. For a great deal. All of these ex-Blockbuster copies. After the show Monty was telling us about how he was buying them from Blockbuster for 3 bucks each years ago.
                                                   Slamboree 1998,1999 and 2000.
Spring Stampede,Superbrawl 2000 and Great American Bash 1999
                                                Then two Ric Flair compilations.
So found 15 decent VHS for what ended up being under 50 cents each.

3 Toys from the Junk Box 05/29/2015

Back with more random toys from the infamous junk box.
I loved the Simpsons. But around 2005 I quit watching.Mostly cause it felt like something was missing from the show. But recently thanks to FXX showing hours of the show each day I have been catching up. And one of my favorite side characters is Comic Book Guy.

I have been going to comic shops since I was fairly young. And sadly Comic Book Guy isn't just an creation of the show. I have met many many Comic Book Guys running various comic shops. With David Sincere of Sincere Comics, two stores one in Mobile AL and one in Florida, being the best example of a real life CBG. Many times I watched him insult the customers to their faces.

Back in 2008 I went to a yard sale that covered a huge rich ass suburb of Jackson. Pretty sure it was in Ridgeland. I wandered into one garage. The owner asked what I was looking for. I told him the various things I collect,IE Pez,toys, comics and DVDS. I had on my very old Krusty the clown shirt. "Oh give me a minute I bet I got a toy you will love." he went into his home and came back out with CBG and the Androids Dungeon Playset. And CBG even still had the half eaten hamburger. Which I have lost.

The figure has articulation at the gut, shoulders and neck. And the paint job while basic does the job. The playset is great. It really looks like a miniature version of many comic shops. And it makes sounds. There are 3 buttons. When pressed and there is no figure on the marked spots each button just makes a cash register sound. But if you have a figure on the special spots you get different phrases based on who is on the spot. Now the only Simpsons figure I have is CBG. But one day I plan on grabbing a few more.

For the 10 people that read it the Android Dungeon playset became Lord Fanboy's Funhouse in my Pezzville web comic. Maybe if people ask nicely I might bring that web comic back :P
As a young kid, like most males in the states,I loved Hot Wheels and Matchbox diecast cars. They were the perfect toy when I was 7 and under. They are cheap. Hard to break. And small enough I could put a few in my pocket, lunchbox or book bag. But once I was about 8 or so I stopped getting them. Action figures and video games took over for Hot Wheels.

Then 3 years ago I had gotten a huge amount of pre-record VHS tapes. A friend that collects VHS was wanting a bunch of them. And told me he had some wrestling themed Hot Wheels. So I got him to take pictures.

What he had was 2 of the Racing Champions line of WCW themed hot rods.Back in the mid to late 90s when WCW was blazing hot they signed a deal with Racing Champions. Which is a group  that was just breaking into the diecast toy car market. With most of their stuff being based on legit race cars.

The WCW cars each came with a base that included a cardboard backing that was a picture of the wrestler. I know quite a few of the readers of my blog are wrestling fans. But I bet lots of them do not remember High Voltage. They were a tag team of two guys that got trained at the infamous WCW Power Plant training facility. They were two big muscled up guys who rarely won a match. For some unknown reason I was a big fan of them. And as far as I know this is the only piece of merchandise they got. And this is one of the 4 diecast toy cars I own now.

This is a Tech Deck Star Wars Darth Vader skateboard along with a Vader themed quarter pipe. These tiny fingerboards have always been interesting to me. Not that I could do any tricks on them. Hell I can barely ride a real skateboard without falling off.

As a kid I was a HUGE Star Wars fan.Owning close to all of the original Kenner released action figures. And lots of other Star Wars themed toys. And as a kid I so wanted to learn how to skate. While most kids in my neighborhood wanted to play football, baseball or basketball. I was wanting to go skating. Which was hard to do when every road was either dirt or so poorly paved it felt like you were riding over a washboard.

Back in the start of the year I was making my monthly visit to Dirt Cheap.I had seen this set there before. But they were only giving 50% off the original price of $20. Way more than I wanted to pay. Now it was 80% off the new sticker price of $15. I grabbed it thinking I would hold onto it and give it to my younger cousin for his birthday in June. Then when  a few weeks ago I made a trip down to go visit him and his family I found  out the only toys he wants to play with now is Legos. So once I got home I opened it up and started playing with it.

Sadly my above pictures aren't the best.  The picture of the ramp doesn't show off how good the graphetti style Vader picture looks. It really looks like some one came by with a stencil and a can of red spray paint and tagged the ramp. The skateboard looks even better. You get the old school Star Wars logo at the top. Then the rest of the board has a great full length portrait of Vader.

Well people I hope you enjoyed this trip into the junk box.

2015 Reading Challenge Book 036 Death of WCW original edition

TITLE-Death of WCW
AUTHOR-R.D. Reynolds & Bryan Alvarez
FORMAT-Over sized trade paperback
FIRST TIME READING-No
COST-$15

I first discovered the Wrestlecrap website about 3 weeks after it started. Yeah I was reading it back when it was R.D. and Merle writing the entries. And for many years every Friday when I got home first thing I would do is go read the new entries. So sometime in 2008 I ordered this book and the Wrestlecrap Book of Lists from Amazon.

As I said in the last paragraph R.D. is the owner of the Wrestlecrap website. And the other author is the lead writer of the Figure Four Weekly newsletter. Bryan Alvarez is a retired pro wrestler. Who  now works with the infamous Dave Meltzer on the Wrestling Observer newsletter, radio show and website. So this book has a nice mixture of wrestling insider knowledge combined with a fan's perspective.

The book covers the entire length of the existence of World Championship Wrestling.WCW started when Ted Turner bought up the old Jim Crockett Promotions. And ended in 2001 when Time Warner got tired of WCW losing piles of money. They cancelled the two WCW TV shows and a piece of wrestling history ended.

The book details all the stupid decisions the various people in charge of WCW made. Like how they paid the wrestler formerly known as Nails for over 3 years, when he only ever had one match in WCW. Or how WCW paid the band Kiss a huge amount of money to get them to perform at an episode of WCW Nitro. As part of this contract with Kiss,WCW created a wrestler based around the Kiss Demon. But in the late 90s WCW had a habit of paying various celebrities way too much money to wrestle. Like Dennis Rodman, who on one PPV showed up so messed up it looked like he passed out while waiting to be tagged into the match. Or the time WCW paid Jay Leno a huge amount of money. For him to do a tag team match at the annual Hog Wild/Road Wild PPV. A PPV that is held at the annual Black Hills Biker rally. A show that was free to see live. So not only did WCW drop huge money on Jay Leno, but it was also at a show where they made no money off the gate.

Now I have heard lots of criticism about this book. With one wrestling forum seeming to have an abnormal amount of hate for this book. Sure there are parts of the book where R.D. and Bryan make mistakes. But from reading posts about the book, you would think 90% of the book is wrong.

I do enjoy this book. Having had read this book at least 5 times. Just recently a 10th anniversary edition was released. I got a copy and read it. Nothing of importance was added to it. And to me it feels like a cash grab by R.D. & Bryan. The one thing that they added that stood out was an epilogue about TNA wrestling. And really this wasn't needed. No matter what lots of fans seem to think TNA has nothing to do with WCW. And really neither fed have much in common. Just because both are/were badly run doesn't mean they are the same.

Death of WCW gets a 3.15 outta 5.

WCW bash at the beach 1997 lucha libre 6 man tag

Remember when you usually got a fun lucha libre match at most WCW ppvs?
