Tales from the Darkside the Movie
1990
Paramount DVD
I loved Tales from the Darkside. So when the film came out I wanted to see it. But for some reason I didn't. It wasn't until about 3 years ago I got a chance to see it. I found the DVD really cheap. So I grabbed it.
This is a horror anthology. The wrap around story has the always gorgeous Debbie Harry. She has kidnapped some young child. And is going to cook him for dinner. So to distract her the kid starts reading short stories out of a book.
The first story is titled Lot 249. Steve Buscemi is a grad student who gets framed by Julianne Moore and some frat asshole. So Buscemi loses his chance of graduating. He plots revenge. But reanimating a mummy. A young Christian Slater appears.
The second story is Cat from Hell. This is an adaptation of a Stephen King short story. A rich man hires a hitman to come kill this cat that is in his house. We get lots of dark comedy in this story.
The final story is Lover's Voe. James Remar sees a demonic looking creature kill someone. But the creature agrees to let Remar live if he never speaks of what he has seen. Remar ends up meeting Rae Dawn Chong and marrying her and having two kids. But he is always haunted by what he saw. Finally he breaks down and tells his wife what he saw. It turns out Rae is the monster and reverts to her monster form. Kills Remar and the kids turn into monsters and fly off.
Then we get the ending of the wraparound story. The kid manages to trip Debbie. He gets out of the cage and shoves her into the stove.
The DVD has a fun commentary with George Romero. And that is pretty much the only extra.
Tales from the Darkside the movie gets a A-.
